Vvt Malfunction?

Hi, hope you guys can give me some advice here.

We have a 53 plate Rav GX 2.0 litre petrol. About a month ago the engine warning light came on and stayed on (the one that says "go straight to your Toyota dealer, do not pass go etc"), was away from home at the time so the AA came out. They ran the diagnostic check and said that they couldn't find a problem - there had been no loss of power or any change in the way the car felt - and thought it may have been a slight misfire or damp getting in somewhere, and reset the light.

The light came on again and stayed on a week ago, so took it in to the Toyota dealer They found "code 1349 VVT system malfunction (bank 1)". they have carried out an "active test, electrical side OK" and advised that it may require a VVTi controller (with an estimate of around £1000 to supply and fit). They reset the light.

The light came on within 40 miles, but this time has gone out again.

My questions are: Do I need to get it checked out again or if the light is out is it OK? Has anyone else had this problem? Do I need a new VVTi controller?

Thanks in advance, Jo

googling P1349 throws up some good info that may help. In particular the dutch.northwestmr2.com page is interesting. It shows the fault finding flow diagram that Toyota use. Can't say I've seen this fault before on here.

i could almost bet on it needing the controller, i have done a few, no need to take timming case off, you can just take the cams out, not sure on the part price but £1000 is well over price
