Chips Anyone

Well popped over to Parts King (Lindop dealers) a couple of weeks back and got them to install a performance chip to my 4.3 Rav 4d4

Performance has confirmed just what Kingo said smooth more even delivery and noticable improvment and the MPG knocking around town on the last fill has been good 40/41 mpg (BP Ultimate normal fill)

Bearing in mind that figure is around town mainly SWMBO driving as I can rarely get the keys off her unless it needs refueling.

Lindop did the job while I waited around an hour in the showroom. They were busy selling special offers the day I was there but I managed to dodge the sales staff pretty well during my visit.

I think I did spot Kingo lurking on the sales pitch at one point with a camara but did'nt realise it was him till I got back and saw a photo of him on their site.

So anyone thinking about trying a chip give it a go and give him a bell. Price fitted was £408 all in and you will notice an improvement.

Thanks Kingo By the way I did not want to disturb you on the day as it seemed busy so I kept a low profile.

Hi petee glad someone else has got one felt like a lone crusader. I love mine and i posted a photo of my clock showing a 172 mile journey 54.9 mpg ifind i can maintain my speed with my foot barely resting on the accelerator. only one slight drawback.little bit of exhaust smoke when you gun it but nothing to worry about. also for anyone wanting to do it. Toyota insurance quoted me £481 wthout the chip and £581 with it, Cheapest quote inc chip was £388 from churchill. but try gocompare.com lots of companies wouldnt quote for modified vehicle but got quotes from 6 that would, varied between two quotes above, I do wonder under what circumstances an insurance assesor would know the vehicle had been chipped anyway but thats up to the individual.we are hardly boy racers with souped up novas.Hope your happy with it Petee and please keep us posted Oh and thanks again Kingo 2284523940_b8a09029c6.jpg

Lurking  With intent I hope :D:

Thanks for the testimonials chaps, it has been difficult getting them in writing from customers, lots say they are great but never put pen to paper, so thank you for that. Would you mind me using your text on our website? No names mentioned of course, just initials and Post town!

On the subject, I have had 3 T180 kits delivered. I have fitted one on an SR180 fleet car. The salesman who uses it says it has turned into a fantastic drive. I just need to check out one thing before they go on general release, as when the car was pulling away from a junction at speed, the VSC light came on and engine power dipped, we are currently testing wheather this was a fault on the car or anything to do with the chip kit, will keep you all informed over the next few days. This salesman had a grin on his face like he just sold ten cars, he was used to a 2.0 RAV with chip kit which he misses dearly!

Thanks again

Kingo

SWMBO was getting 50 + mpg on a run but we have only been around town since fitting so will know more when we open up our holiday home up Wales later this month and have a longer runs. The Rav has only jut done 12000 so is just run in really

It certainly feels more responsive and as you say the lightest of touches on the gas and cruises nicely.

I think our stalwart Anchorman fancies a go at one of these mods and no doubt will have all the technical figures when he eventually tries the upgrade.

Will be interested to see who else has a dabble.

Kingo yea use the text if you want more let me know

I think they are worth the money and your description is spot on i e better smoother power delivery

I'm not a boy racer (retired cop) that was not the purpose of it but the added power on overtakes is brill

Problem these days is all the pestly speed scamara partnerships takes alot of the pleasure away from motoring in particular the North Wales area.

  • 3 weeks later...

Is this the kind of chip that comes in it's own plastic box and connected with plugs on it like this?

Typhoon_Common_Rail_Diesel_Tuning_Box.jpg

Or is it the one, an actual chip which needs to be soldered in?

HI, I have a new XTR 2.0 vvt and was wondering what benefits would I get from adding a chip kit to the petrol version

Out of interest what sort of MPG increase do you get by adding a Chip to the T180.At the moment I get about 35mpg out of mine and could I expect nearer 40mpg with the Chip on board.

Kingo, have you sorted the problem out with the T180 Tuning box yet as mentioned in previous post?

Not yet Clare, the boffins in Germany are working out it Grrrrrr I could sell dozens of them IF they were available. The good thing is I know the company produce a great product so I'm prepared to wait and see what happens. The chip they produced caused all sorts of weird things to happen if you "Gunned" the car over 4000 RPM. The chip kits on all other models are not affected, and you do benefit from a slightly better MPG, this of course is dependent on how you drive the car, but most people see a 3-5 MPG benefit, plus of course the extra 20% BHP

One thing that has always bugged me (and concerned me as well) a bit about these chip upgrades...

If they provide better response then the standard ECU configuration, and better MPG, and more power, WHY don't the car makers - and this includes ALL of them, not just Toyota - program the ECU better in the first place?

If these aftermarket specialists can do this, how come the big makers with R&D depts probably WAY bigger then these companies and with a WAY bigger budget not get the same result?

Surely there must be a reason?

BTW - any chips to make the VVTi better (extra MPG would be nice :D )

Hoovie.

Hoovie.

In design and particularly design for large volume manufacture, there is nearly always some trade off (compromise) of one performance parameter against another. Sometimes for cost reasons, sometimes for longevity/reliability/factory reject rate reasons.

It could be, for example, when you chip, you are trading off performance for engine life and maybe Mr T didn't want to swing that trade off towards performance at the expense of engine life, or his engine production reject rate would be higher, for that level of performance.

Perhaps not, just an opinion, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was the case.

Cheers

I agree with above to a point, it probably has more to do with emissions etc and being able to trade off performance/fuel consumption

Sorry we dont do a chip for the petrol models, only diesel

Just got back from 1036 ml trip up to scotland and back, and have to say overall fuel consumption for avehicle this size was not bad at approx 38mpg what is annoying is that my trip computer is showing an average of 49.3 mpg, on the journey there fully laden and mostly around 80 mph i actually averaged

65mph. my trip was showing 44.2 mpg but when i filled up i put in 40.5 ltrs for 295 mls. which i calculate to be 33.2 mpg, once there and touring around i got 42 mpg and my comp was showing 52 mpg. Could my chip be affecting reading? or is it possible for computer to be 10 mpg out? any answers please

I must admit I regard the "range" and "fuel consumption" readouts as a guide, rather than being a precise measure. The acid test is, as you have done, fill it to the brim, note the mileage, drive around, fill it to the brim, and work out the mpg (or l/100km, for me). Even this assumes that the odometer is reading accurately! According to my Tomtom, the speedo over-reads by about 7%, ie it tells me I'm doing 122 km/h when the speedo reads 130 km/h.

Not that I'm complacent, either, but at the end of the day, I've bought the car, I'm gonna drive it from A to B to C etc, I'm either going to drive "enthusiastically" or "quietly" - or some shade in between - and I'm going to keep putting petrol in it. For me, like most people I guess, petrol is a "distress purchase". Sure, I want to get a decent fuel consumption but given that it's going to use some, my primary concern is to make sure that I enjoy the drive :driving:

Having said all of that, my average consumption according to the readout (having left it for about 1000 km) is 9.6l/100km - 29.4 mpg, I think!! If I work it out from the odometer, it comes in at 10l/100km - which I think is 28 mpg. That's a 2.0 VVT-i, and my journey to work is 5 minutes to get out of town, then 50km motorway directly into where I work. My better half's Rav 4.2 (1.8l 2wd) says it uses 7.5l/100km = nearly 38 mpg. And her driving is mainly short journeys/town.

By law any inaccuracy in the speedo must be high. The specifications from the Toyota Manual are as follows;

The first number is the actual speed and the number in brackets is the permitted range for the indicated speed.

MPH

20 (21 -23.5)

40 (41.5 - 44)

60 (62.5 - 66)

80 (83 - 87)

100 (104 - 108.5)

120 (125 - 130)

And don't forget as the tyres wear these numbers will get higher. It follows that your calculations and the trip computer indications will be out by a similar amount. It also means that if your trip meter shows you have done 100 miles you will only really have done between 96 and 92 miles.

Best bet is to record actual fuel used and calibrate your speedo against a known distance - the latter not easy without a test track!
