Front bearings are adjustable all you need is a 54mm socket, or I have done it with a pair of grips.

The bottom ball joint is easy to do if you have a good jack and a length of pipe+ joint splitter, undo the anti roll bar link as well.

Suggest you contact Milner Off Road for spares and purchase from them a Toyota Prado 1996 - 2004 Repair Manual.

The Prado has same mechanicals as your Surf.

He has a Hilux, no mention of a Surf.

it is a hilux 2.4td pick up and not a surf

why does it seem that the newer d4d engine is not as good as the 2.4td engine - as we have got an 03 reg one

many thanks for the advice

its handy 2 tighten the bearings.its easier to check the play in the bearing with the wheel on.u can leave the wheel on or of.loosen the row of 10mm bolte on the tab for turning on 4 wheel drive.mark the plate with tip ex.loosen the row of 12mm nuts.there is a cone shape washer on each of these nuts.spray wd 40 on them.they can be tricky 2 get out.sometimes u have 2 shock the washers.lightly tip the housing and it should come of.u will then see the 2 nuts with a washer in between them.hammer back the tabs.loosen the outer nut.it shud be loose enough to come of with a pliers.take of washer.tighten inner nut with a pliers or a socket.dont over tighten the nut.shake the wheel all over to check the play.thats it.
