Mazda Rx8

The missus wants to get a Mazda RX8 and get to rid of my beloved T-Sport in the summer....

What does everyone think of these??? My mate has one and its is heavy on fuel....I wouldnt be too concerned about fuel consumption because now I would only do about 6,000 miles a year...and i can borrow a new TDi Octavia from work for road trips B)

They're great cars. Only bad points being fuel and oil consumption, but if you don't care about them then go for it!

Make sure you don't get one in VED Band G though (post March 2006), it will be £400 a year to tax soon and an earlier one will hold its value better.

Rev higher than a TS too. :D

Don't expect a huge step up in performance.

Id get a compressor if you wanted to change, performance wise their not that good 180 or 231bhp versions, my girlfriends yaris TS sat with one til 80 so i personally dont think much of them for the extra fuel price

Dunno if im getting old, but i dont really care about performance as much....my mate has the 190bhp version and its far from slow TBH, although i would go for the 231bhp version if it turned up at the right price....

How does the Yaris compare against the Corolla???

I like the Compressor....but ive already had one Corolla and i think id get bored pretty quickly...

Also going to look at 04/05 Audi TT's 180/225bhp....although id like to stay Jap for their reliability.

If you can live with the fuel and oil consumption then I think the RX-8 may well be a great choice.

The handling is supposed to be fantastic and I'd definitely like to have one one day.

Not sure about the reliability of the engine; they had a lot of problems in the past with the Rotary engines, but more recently they've been much better I believe.

What about a Celica? They're certainly a differently look, but still Toyota reliability. Of all the cars I've ever had, the Gen 7 Celica is one of the few that I'd like to own again.

I'm one of the people chatman is referring to. Changed from a RX8 231ps to a RAVT 180 about 18 months ago. Ran the 8 for 3 years, and didn't have any major problems with it. As I was one of the first few (released end of Oct 2003, got mine Dec 2003) there were a few niggles, as you would expect with any new car. Agreat place to find out more info is www.rx8ownersclub.co.uk (I used to moderate there). There's not much to say about really. A bit heavy on the juice. I was getting around 22mpg. Does use oil, but not as much as everyone make out. I reckon 1 litre every 2k miles? There has been a few recalls on it, so make sure they have all been done. Oh, the other thing people always mention is flooding. In the 3 years I had one, I never flooded it once. It can however be a problem, if you are not careful. As I said, have a look athe the RX8OC forums. Lots of info there.

And finally, here's what I used to have (taken at a RX8 Prodrive tuition day (which you get with all new RX8s):

That Silver RX8 is stunning looking, identical to my mates one....The oil consumption wouldnt bother me, i always check oil once a week anyway and carry top ups just in case. My mates used a bit of oil at the start but he says it doesnt use half as much now...

I really like the Celica T-Sports, but the 'war office' prefers the RX8 and since she pays half of it I have to get something we both agree on. Oh and the RX8 is RWD B) Roundabouts ahoy B) B)

If i was to get one, it would have to be that lovely blue colour...Also another mate is also a Ford/Mazda Master technician..must ask him what he thinks

Do they really do 22mpg no matter how they are driven??? The T-Sport does 28-32mpg with mostly town driving and the odd bit of lift....

I really like the RX-8. My brother has the 231 and it is defo quicker than mine since you dont have to wait till 6200rpm to get to the power. They handle a lot better as well. On the flooding front, my bro has had his for 3 years and it has happened twice (once being yesterday). It is when you only move the car a little bit, he moved it about a foot across the drive to get another car from the garage. If you just keep the revs at about 3-4k for 15 seconds then it burns the fuel off and will be fine when you start up again. Hope this helps

I looked at one a while back.

Good points are its handling and practicality for a coupe.

Bad points are its terrible on fuel - and at these prices you'll feel it, oh, and it drinks as much oil as fuel, or at least feels like it.

The engine is impressive, if your impressed by torque-less smooth power, if your a V8 kinda-guy you'll be dissapointed.

I have just sold my RX8 and have to say its the best car i have ever owned. I had no issues with reliability at all and was a total joy to drive.

Oil top ups on the rx8 are normal and to be expected due to the engine design. Incidentally my Corolla Verso vvti now burns much more oil than my rx8 ever did!!

I work for mazda and have done for about 5 months

I'm not a fan

As long as you warm it up properly before you switch it off, it shouldn't flood. we get about 4-6 towed in per week due to flooding

There has been a recent campaign for oil cooler pipes recall. We have only had one leaking but, its still something to check out

we have also had a lot of broken catalytic converters. it can happen at any age and any mileage. we had one destroy itself with 2 miles on the clock! it wasn't even PDI'd yet!

There are a lot of symptons: poor performance, extremly high fuel economy, MIL light illuminating, poor emissions (won't pass on the MOT) and various others. They are around £700 to replace. if they clog the back box and centre pipe up, you're looking at a £1600 bill for all 3 bits

just my thoughts and experiences
