Hey Guys,

Is there any other way to check (read) if my Ecu has got some faults other than OBD equipment? Maybe to see on the dashboard display or my sat nav screen (colour). My car is Avensis 2003, 2.00 VVTi, Automatic, T4.

Any help would be nice.

Thanks

Wojciech

I asked this question myself about my 1998 1.8 GLS. From what I know the pre vvti models can have the ECU flash the codes. This is done by connecting terminals 4 & 13 on the diagnostic socket and turn on the ignition, but don't start the engine. The engine, ABS & SRS lights flash. The vvti cars only ABS & SRS flash! I used this to find and fix my O2 (leanburn)sensor fault.

You will have to buy a code reader. They aren't too expensive and they do job you are asking about. Check the adds on the site or search the web.

Someone may prove me wrong about the vvti and find a way of getting faults displayed on the dashboard.

I hope this helps.

I just bought a "OBD CAN-BUS ELM 327 Interface Scanner ELM327 USB 327USB" from davidvip9999 on eBay (about £16, slow boat from HK). Getting the software working was a bit fiddly but it works - obviously you need a laptop, or desktop PC + long cable.

This device says the code is P0380 (glow plug/ heater circuit A). Three weeks ago my local garage charged £60 to tell me the code was P0308 (Undocumented / Cylinder 8 misfire) - and he doesn't want to refund, he says I need to learn to trust him :P.

Hi mate,

I have been think about it but the question is Will it works with my Avensis 2003 new shape. Is it reliable ,I mean if my car does not have a fault will it say no fault found or it will try to force it?

Cheersa

My car is a 53 reg Avensis D4D, I pressed 'clear codes' on my laptop and the light went off yesterday. This is not rocket science electronics, its a standard way for all cars to talk to the garage diagnostics equipment. All technology has bugs, could be that this device is reporting the wrong code but at the moment I'm thinking the garage didn't write the three digits correctly, so I'm following the (glow plug/ heater circuit A) path. If its right this time I'll trust it more next time. The other way is to take it to the garage I took my car to, and trust them to tell you the wrong code !

From what I have read all petrol cars from ~2000 and diesels from ~2003 are OBD compatible and this device supports all the 'OBD protocols', so it should be a useful investment. I plan to try it on my wifes Honda Accord 2000.

I'm having trouble getting an ELM327 (v1.2a) talking to my wifes Avensis Verso D4D (53 plate). I've tried lots of different demo s/w but they are all unable to talk to the vehicle - usually stating unrecognised protocol. What software are you using to talk to your D4D ? I'm wondering if maybe my ELM327 is faulty, although it has no trouble talking to my Volvo - although that may be a different protocol. Does anyone know what protocol the D4D engines are using ?
