Should I Take The Plunge?

Mornin all.

After almost 3 years of near faultless ownership of Rita - my Gen6 1.8ST (my girlfriend named her  ) should i finally make the move to a Gen 7? I've never even sat in one let alone driven 1 so i'd appreciate anyone's opinion. I imagine that because mine is the 1.8, i'd notice a decent increase in power even in the lower powered Gen 7? What else do you recon i'd notice?

I just don't want to spend a few grand to discover that it's not that much better, i think mine still looks class but i'm still tempetd...

Cheers in advance

I've stuck in a recent pic too :)

i've never owned any other gen of celica apart from my gen 7, so i can't make a comparison, but i'd say take the plunge! i love my gen 7, they're great, fun to drive, quick, and good looking cars. i test drove a 140 when i was looking for one, but bought the 190 in the end... the 140 was quick, but hitting lift in the 190, you just can't help but grin :D

then again, what about holding onto your gen6 for now and saving up some pennies for the rumoured release of the gen8 in 2009  ? i'm so excited about the prospect that i think i just pee'd in my pants a bit

The short answer is yes, but make sure you get the face lift version. It really depends on how you drive as regards 140 or 190.

the gen 7 always brings a smile to my face as i power it round a corner overtaking, never had a gen 6 so i also cant compare. go and have atest drive.

also gen 8 ?? has there been any pictures released yet or ideas on what the spec and design will be

ive had an gen 6 st and a gen 6 gt and have now brought a gen 7 140 ! the gen 7 is a big step up in the handling department compared to the gen 6 and due to its light weight and short shift 6 speed box it really makes good use of its 140 + bhp so my answer would be a big YES !!!!! :D

I agree with Jerry Phillips, take then gen 7 for a test drive, i'm sure it will convince u to buy it,

very comfortable to sit in and drive, handling is good......

brakes on the other hand, i'm not so sure about...or it could just be my car....

it's your car!! great brakes on mine :D when the celica was road tested in a group test against its rivals it came out tops in the braking department ( and everything else  )

nope, i dont think i'm the only one, monkeynuts had a few issues with his aswell,

mine are abs, when braking hard, if i'm right, they should lock, unlock, lock unlock and so on.

also mine felt a bit spongy to me, and when brake hard it didnt quite stop when i expected it to,

so i bled the brakes, pads and discs appeared to be fine, next step was a hard brake test, 30-40mph, slammed my foot hard on the brake pedal, wheels didnt lock, (but some how there was a little smoke out the back wheels, but my bro said he didnt see it locking) any way the garage said brakes were fine.

so i definetly think the barkes are shiiite, other than that i think the cars fine (expet for the oild probs a few have had)

p.s. buy the gen 7 u wont regret it

The OE front Discs on the gen 7 are prone to corrosion on the INSIDE edge, as the "drop off" in braking performance will be very gradual you're unlikely to notice it, so it's worth getting on your back and checking for rust every few weeks. This surface corrosion seems to particularly affect Cars that cover a low mileage, my front Discs lasted just 6K miles before being thrown in the bin. I now have Red Dot Discs and Pads fitted and no problems.

Thanks for all the replies guys :)

Well i took a 140 for a test drive this evening.

Firstly i thought the handling was superb, and it was definately quicker than mine. The dealer wanted $5995 (my laptop is american with no pound sign  ) for this silver 2001 example with 49000 miles. I thought however that the car had quite a lot of road noise especially from the back - but it was fitted with 18" alloys so maybe that contributed to it. He also decided in his wisdom that mine was worth 1000 pounds which, considering it's superb condition and below average (90000) mileage, i thought was a bit s**t but i guess that's dealers for you. Or perhaps i was being overly hopefull. But i don't think i'll be wanting to spend 5000 pounds to change, so if i choose to get one i guess i'll sell privately. Might just stick with my car for a bit longer tho....

ps the brakes seemed fine to me :P
