HELP!!

Friends of ours have accidentally put petrol in their 1 year old DIESEL RAV4 and driven 20+ miles before it packed in. (I was not me honest :D )

What would be the best thing for them to do without having to take it to an expensive dealer.

Have they totally knackered the engine or can it be cleaned.

Thanks for any suggestions to advise our worried friends!

Matt

Sorry to inform you it does not sound promising!!! if they had spotted that they had put it in before starting the car up they may had been able to save the day and had there tank drained .

I suggest you do a search on the forums as this happens many times I do not think there is any cheap or quick fix

Also are they members of Club Toyota i suggest a call to them .

OUCH!!!!!!! not good :o :o

As they have driven 20 miles it has got into the fuel pump and probably not done this any good....

They should not drive this any more and will need to get all the pipes and gubbins flushed through...These new High Pressure Diesel's don't like Petrol being put through them...

Will probably need to get towed to a dealer for investigation...but may be an expensive mistake I'm afraid..don't want to invalidate any warranty by using second rate parts or some other grease monkey damaging what's already been done... :( :(

They will need to be calling their insurance company!

Toyota won't pay for the repairs and they are looking into 4 figures to fix easily I think :(

Some insurance companies will cover this type of mistake, check it out with them. You even have to replace the high pressure pipes once you crack open the unions!

Probably the only advantage with my old LR ! I reckon it would run on dishwater!

And having invested in a Land Rover magazine, fell out of bed when I saw the cost of replacements parts - including replacement engines! Then again, the number of times things need replaced, its just as well. :)

So easy to get mixed up between diesel and petrol. I remember the old days where the diesel pump was separate from the petrol pumps. And in between would be a paraffin pump!!

It is about time in this day and age with all the electronics in just about everything that a mismatched pump and car just doesn't allow filling. I reckon it would cost maybe £5 per car tops

The AA sorted this out for me on my Vauxhall Mariva it cost me #250 but that included upgrading the Homestart, they had a special vehicle with a pumping system on it. Its been fine since

Well at that stage the next steps are simple. You purge out as much petrol as you can and try it. If it won't go then you worry but surprisingly they often do.

I would be more concerned if it were a T180 as the implications for the emission system are a bit wider reaching especially with the sensitive 5th injector.

The bottom line is - you've got nowt to lose!
