Engine Idle Speed After Starting

My 1999 2.0 Auto estate has recently developed a low idling speed just after starting from cold and feels as though it will cut out. If I blip the throttle once, revs will rise but then drop until the engine cuts out. If I hold the revs at around 1000 for a minute or so, it will then idle at about 800. From what I can remember before this problem developed, on cold start up the engine would idle above 1000rpm until it had reached a 'normal' temperature and then drop down to around 700-800.

I have just searched through the forum and read posts refering to cleaning the throttle housing, changing spark plugs and leads.

Can anyone suggest something to help me out?

Thank you.

as a temp fix, you could always turn on the heaters on warm..

Otherwise I would look at the Throttle body, and cable

I had a similar problem on my Carina E 2.0 and it was a sticky idle speed control valve. Solution is to take the intake hose off the throttle body and take off the idle speed control actuator (small thing under the intake hose on the throttle body held on with 2 screws on mine) - blast it all out with carb cleaner and check the little rod the idle speed actuator sits over (controls the valve) turns side to side smoothly.

Cheers,

Dan

I added a bottle of STP Injector cleaning fluid into the tank yesterday and that seems to have cured the problem! Fingers crossed.

When I first start mine it will rev at about 1500 rpm then drop down to 600 rpm once it has warmed up.

It costs me around £50 to fill the tank and that will give me 250 miles, thats driving to and from work through town every day.

Mine is a 2.0 litre auto.
