Rear Axle Knock And Occasional Judder

Hi all

I have a N reg 95 RAV4 with 96,000 on the clock. Recently a knocking sound has appeared on the overun when I lift my foot from the accelerator pedal - worse during first few miles. Also when pulling away on a slight incline sometimes there is a judder from the rear axle area but only rarely. Any thoughts, please?

Hi Colin

Welcome to the club.

We have a member called bothwell buyer who has a lot of experience with those things. I think he once said there are some bushes that go but if you sit tight I'm sure he will respond (unless another helpful owner knows).

Bothy is nocturnal and well come out of his sett with the badgers later on.

Cheers.

Badgers were away wine tasting today so we waited for the train to Glasgow .....10 minutes late of course it was.

The clunk on over-run or acceleration at the rear is due to wear on the suspension bushes.

The rear has trailing arms, and I believe the lot has to come down to replace the main bushes. Aside of this, is a rubber bush which holds the rear diff from trying to swivel. If this is worn, which it will be, then it allows the rear diff to rock back and fro giving the clunk you hear. Nothing too dangerous - aye richt!!

At that mileage, get a friendly mechanic to replace the rear suspension bushes cos they will all need done. the rear diff mount can be packed with a stiffener, but I'd replace it anyway.

I got used to the wear in the rear suspension, until the car failed its MOT and the mechanic said the rear suspension was really just hanging on - cos its 4 wheel drive you don't notice but another driver not used to the car will !

Prices - I'm not sure. I've just had the whole rear suspension re-done on RAV4 '94 2nd car but they are still fitting the turbo engine to it so don't know a price. I think its maybe a 1 day job. Parts-King here will give you a discount price on the bushes. I did try to get polybushes for the car but was told they no longer do them for the '94 age RAV. The '96 RAV in USA is the same car and there are more availability from there but the shipping is a bit steep so be careful.

I'm waiting for the arrival of a rear anti-roll bar for RAV version 1 as its rear trailing arms need the bearings replaced and with the power it has, it can be interesting.

Now, if I'd known that I could probably have paid for your flight!!

If you go onto the internet there and look up polybushes, you should see suppliers - or find a car accessory shop who might be able to order them for you. Remember that the RAV only got to USA in 1996 so don't say a 1995 model or you'll confuse them! The 1996 is identical...apart from being left hand drive.

Regarding the diff mount .... can you tell just by looking if it needs replacing or does the whole thing have to be removed and pulled apart ??
