He points out that it is an "authentic" replica (makes you wonder what a "fake" replica is then :D ), not a look-alike. I've seen some pretty good replicas that stand a comparison with the original, but I'm not a Ferarri fan, so I haven't tried to judge the quality of his one

It's not really the quality i got an issue with, it's little things that aren't right like, the interior (MR2), the windows are the wrong size blah, blah, blah etc etc. Who remembers the 80's Aston Martin replicas based on..............wait for it...........The CAPRI. Ok so it looks like an Aston but then an Austin Allegro overtakes you!!!!!!....what then? Pretend you were gonna turn off anyway  I don't understand why people want their cars to look like other cars. eg. Take a really decent MR2pref. Turbo - A few grand, by the kit - another couple of grand, get it fitted professionally so it looks right, another coupl of grand, paint it - loadsa money, buy all the finishing kit (wheels, badges etc etc) - another coupla grand. *****, you can buy a pristine 308/328 these days for 6/7k and suffer the insurance for the privilege of being able to drive one of these babies and hey presto, you have probably SAVED money...................................Ahem, servicing/parts etc is another story!

For the interior & windows etc it depends on the quality of the kit. Some AC Cobra kits based on the MGB weren't all that bad, and there have been manufacturers sueing the replica makers for being too good (I'm thinking Lotus/Caterham vs. Westfield for example). Then again there are some really crap copies - to which I suppose he is referring with "look-alike".

Another non-starter I remember was a 911 turbo kit (I won't honour it with the word "replica") based on the trusty Beetle. Looks great... until you start the engine :P

As to the cost, you're not too far off the mark :D

Lets be honest, you can pick up an early 348 for about 15 grand now... which is what it probably cost to put the above car together!

I suspect that the cost of his car (if it is really as good as he says) cost him quite a bit more than 15k...

After all, it's now at 13k and the reserve is not met...
