T180 Run Flat Tyres

I'd like to gauge some thoughts on the experience that I have just had following a 20,000 mile service. The front tyres on my T180 were said to be "amber" (1.6, 3, 1.6) or "red" (1, 3, 1). Thinking that I'd be able to source the tyres more cheaply elsewhere I went firstly to KwikFit and then to ATS and have now found that, seemingly, only the dealership can fit the tyres because of the special machinery required. This in itself is bad enough and is something that potential purchasers should be made aware of at the time of purchase. Working in the financial services sector, if my Toyota dealership were a bank or insurance company I can guarantee that it would have had a mis-selling charge laid at its door by the Financial Services Authority!

At ATS today they kindly measured the tread on each of the tyres again with alarmingly different results (3, 3, 3) in both cases - both amber, but not illegal. Could it be that Toyota are trying to quickly recoup the cost of the machines required to change these tyres by misstating the state of the tread on the tyres? Can anyone tell me how much 2 new tyres would be, what it would cost to fit them and whether it can be done anywhere other than a dealership?

Hi there cademi. Welcome to TOC. You obviously haven't used the search function yet ;) There are several threads on the T180 runflats.

Yes, only Toyota can change them, and we are not happy. :censor:

The cost of tyres vary from dealership to dealership and will cost you £200+ fitted, for ONE!! :censor: :censor:

If you're not happy about it, complain to Toyota GB. Let them know we're not happy. That's all we can do atm, unless you want to replace all your wheels/tyres at your own cost!!

As for the other bit. Well, that's dealers for you!! Granted not all dealers are the same, so get yourself a decent one.

Personally, I have to drive past 2 other dealers, and ignore the one next to my work, to get to the one I want to use, and also where I bought my car from..
