Ok i know this has been threads about this before but i wanted to clarify.... how do i programme a spare key for my RAV 4.1? the key has been cut and i tired it in the door and it worked but then the alarm went off (oops!). The woman at Timpsons said the instructions should be in the car handbook but it isn't. Is it in the Haynes manual does anyone know?

Cheers.

These keys need to be programmed. The key contains a chip and will start the car but the alarm goes off. A toyota dealer is your best bet. The labour time is half an hour. You will need another master key to do this. To stop the alarm going off, lock the car with the key in the door lock and unlock likewise. The downside is that your alarm is not activated when the vehicle is "locked" using this method.

Keith ;)

Cheers.

As the type of alarm changed, there's no detail in the Haynes manual.

Well, my closest dealer said that the fobs were no longer availlable for the 4.1 and they rewired the immobilizer and alarm to disable them when both keys gave up the ghost.

Agree with Keith and you can also use the round key into the top of the box on the bulkhead to shut up the alarm, but this does not seem to allow you to start the car.

Being new to these modern things, my key fobs have a black and a red button on them — what is the red one for (yes, I know this must be a silly question!)?

I only got one key with my car - i think it must be the master so no spare round one. My key fob has two buttons, one to open, one to close - dont have a red button??

It doesn't take much but I'm a bit confused here; are we talking about programming a chipped key or just getting the car to recognise the remote. If it is the latter then I believe it was posted not long ago that you press and hold both buttons while next to the car for about 15 seconds then press the unlock button. I'm not sure about getting the car to recognise a chipped key.

Did the key come from a dealer?

Thanks Anchorman, I have found the thread on

http://toyotaownersclub.com/forums/index.p...3&hl=remote

but I am doon sooth at the moment and it would be more than the coos that would be disturbed if it did not work at this time of night!

So, what is the Red button for? It does not seem to do anything on either key fob.

Is it a panic button? If you press and hold a panic button it will sound the alarm to deter would be thieves or attackers.

Rip the lot out and use 2 knitting needles to hot wire the beast, and a ball of wool on the drivers seat as a deterrent.

Or turn the gear knob around 180 degrees so no-one can find 1st gear.

Switch the positions of the brake pedal and the accelerator.

Reverse the ratchet on the handbrake.

Carry the hydraulic brake fluid in yer handbag.

Or buy a landrover. It has all the above built in!!

Anchorman - i am talking about programming the key with a chip in it.

So to clarify:

I only have one master key and one key fob for the remote locking. I got a spare key cut from Timpsons and it opens the door fine but the chip isnt programmed so the imoboliser kicks in when trying it in the ignition. Someone rightfully pointed out that regardless of the chip - if you use eithier of the keys to open the car door the alarm goes off!! so looks like i need a spare fob as well....

I searched the forum and found previous threads with instructions to program the key e.g. press brake 6 times etc this hasnt worked

One problem i have is that the instructions state that you wait 1 min for the security light to stop flashing which indicates the programming is complete - i have no such light????

:( :( do i have to go to Toyota and pay a fortune to program the key??

Thanks all.

Still no luck - looked on another RAV forum as well - no one seems to know how to program my key. I'll have to go to a dealership i think when i have some spare cash (id imagine its going to cost a bit).

Told you but you chose to ignore it. Obviously it wasn't an expensive enough 'fix'. get gold plated knitting needles if thats yer problem.

Or just fix a starter button and a few switches for the electrics and an earth on the ECU

It'll work fine for the fine folk of derbyshire and all who sail in those pairts

Ah well, I shall be interested if you manage to get a new fob as the Inverness dealer is steadfast in his belief that they are no longer available for the 4.1.

So far the fix on

http://toyotaownersclub.com/forums/index.p...3&hl=remote

has continued to work for my once-deficient key.

As Parts King said before, the early immobiliser system manufacturer went bust. This was a system with a almost square fob with a red and a black square button. If you have an actual key, then it will be a later system - pm Parts-King with detail and maybe he can keep you right.

!Removed! that, it worked the other day!

The information was posted by sotal and the advice is:

Not got chance to test this yet (as I can't find my non working keyfob!) but a lot of people have had problems with their keyfobs recently.

I've got a friend who works for the RAC and whilst he was round I got him to look up keyfobs etc for Celicas and there was a load of information which had been given to the RAC by Toyota Technicians.

Anyway the main points were:

FAULT: KEYFOB STOPPED WORKING BUT LED LIGHTS UP AND BATTERIES ARE OK

Step one.

Resync - Stand near the car and press both buttons together and hold them down for two seconds (this will only work with the car it was intended to work with)

Step two (if step one failed to work).

Reset Circuitry - Press and hold the furthest button away from the chain (arm button) now whilst keeping it held undo the screw on the back and remove the back cover - this will inturn remove the battery. Keep the arm button pressed down, wait atleast 10 seconds and then replace the back cover. Now release the arm button and test the remote. If it fails to operate try Step 1 again.

Step three. (If all else fails)

Unlock the car with the key, the alarm will sound for 30 seconds, during this time get in and close the door and turn the key to ACC. Wait until the alarm stops. Then start the car, this will temporarily disable the alarm for the journey. When you get to your destination open the door before you stop the engine. Once you close the door the alarm will rearm itself

I will try Step 2 as soon as I find the duff Fob!

I guess you could use the time that the alarm is temporarily disabled to open the bonnet and disconnect the siren. To save the 30 seconds of noise when you return to the car - but I also presume you would still have to wait the 30 seconds to start it???

Hope this helps someone - might be worth being put as a pinned topic if it works

Good luck,

George
