2 Smoking T180's

I have a colleague with one of the first T180's in a Verso. He does high mileages and doesn't hang around.

His Verso began to smoke intermittently from the exhaust - white & smelly in the "unburnt oil" sense- soon his car slowed dangerously & limited the revs to 2000 max.

Limped home & took it to the dealer. After several visits & many phonecalls to Toyota from the dealer it is revealed that an engine part is badly "coked up" and so is the CAT Converter.

Apparently Toyota view this engine as a "highly tuned performance engine" which should use high performance diesel....ouch. Don't remember them telling us this.....

My Avensis T180 Tourer is 9 months old, 25K on the clock, & beginning to smoke intermittently - not neccessarily under heavy acceleration but white puffs on coasting as well. Both cars are leased & have the usual TLC re servicing etc.

We both use normal diesel most of the time - expensive variants only when forced to due to availability at the pumps.

I wonder if anyone else is beginning to see this - anyone out there pushing 30K - 40K yet on one of these engines?

They are driven "enthusiastically" on occasion and we get 31 - 35 mpg on a run (ouch - and that's on the cheap stuff...)

Is it just bad luck & a coincidence?

I can't remember seeing anything in the manual about using special diesel - only low-sulphur.

I have stripped plenty of 2.0/2.2&2.2D-Cat engines since the release (oil usage). The inlet and EGR valve and associated pipes are always FULL of soot. Alot of the time it clogs the EGR valve and brings up code P0400. After this a new EGR valve should be fitted and an ECU reflash carried out.

I couldnt believe it when i first stripped one down that the inlet was dirtier than the exhasut side!! lol.

Mart.

Have Just joined TOC tonight

Intrested in the number of smoking T180, I have an 08 plate T180 tourer that has been back to the dealer 6 times for excesive fuel consumption and smoking. every time i get the message that there is nothing wrong "computer says no". Dispite the oil light comming on between services, the car is on lease with Toyota and they will only use semi synthetic oil. The car is approtaching 40K interested to hear if anyone has cracked the problem.

On another note we have 2.2 diesel T3x 07 plate just turned 60K and has blown a head gasket, just out of warranty.Has anybody any information on any problems with head gaskets on this engine, as two more 07 plate have turned up with failed gasket at my main dealer

We have a Rav T180 with just over 90k miles to look after and no problems so far. We are always told when we have running faults on any toyota that the quality of fuel is quite a big problem. Our area is a bit rural and have farmers using their own supplies and you want to see the state of the fuel filters in some of them!
