Diesel Additives - Anybody Using

A couple of recent threads made me wonder if anyone is using any additive (I'm thinking of Redex, Miller's, that sort of thing) and whether it makes a difference.

my opinion is that you'd better chose the best filling station with good diesel qualty confirmed by good acceleration and cold staring. All fuel additives are money for nothing. they are look good but in fact do nothing, as per my experience. in winter time when was -minus 16C i have been using a pure jet kerosene in ratio of 1ltr/20 ltr diesel. It is guarantee that diesel will not get frozen at cold temp below zero. I have noteced no any negative effects to the engine injection system. But before using you'd better be consulted at your garage.

Looking at your signature I have the impression that you drive a petrol engine. How come you used diesel in the winter?

Do not refer to the petrol engine I have stated. My experience with diesel engines is from 1985. They are like a babies for me.

Re jet kerosene -- it works perfectly -- believe me. I have an experience to change fine fuel filter at minus 16 C due to diesel was frozen (!!!). I have been taking the rule to have one spare filter + one spare fuel valve tested in my own garage with my in the car :D -- it looks maybe strange -- but it is the life and the driiver must be ready to make a minor repair somewhere out of garage.

Sorry - I forgot to say that I have been driving Ford Sierra 2.3 DL during six years round and it is self explained.

Hi again,

I see, not it is clear. I have heard the story for mixing kerosene with even petrol before to increase the efficiency of the fuel mix. So for diesel it shoudl work perfectly by reducing the freezing temperature. I got it wrong due to your sig. I know how cold it could be in Ukraine, I was there in 1989, Kiew. Not in the winter though :D

Thing is, Igor, it always starts well (we don't perhaps have quite your winters) and the acceleration is fine. But then again, it's a newish car.

I'm just wondering if there's any precaution I should take.

i would only recomend you to use a high quality diesel and save your money. we always pay at least 30-40% just for the brand name -- are you ready to support those names? i am definitely not. do not feed your engine with rubbish and it will serve you a years.

but of course it is your decision what to do, then :D

I also read that Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) is used for cleaning injectors - some people put it directly in the fuel filter when changing it. Then rev the engine up to 4000rpm for about 10min to aid flushing.

Should I bother with any of the above or like Igor said - they are all waste of money?

Hi all

It never ceases to amaze me how people keep on falling for the "magic" additive / performance enhancer / snake oil twaddle that get touted every few years.

Simple fact is that the likes of Toyota, Mercedes et al spend MILLIONS getting their engines to work as best as possible, and all they ask is we treat the engine with a degree of sympathy and give it good quality oil and fuel, and service it at regular intervals (which you can normally extend a bit).

The old ATF trick works because the exhaust smokes Dot Cotton on Woodbines, but does diddly squat of any use.

IF any of these additives were any cop, they would have been bought up years ago, and used by everyone.

So by all means go ahead and waste your money and possibly damage your engine in the process. Those of use who beleive in regular quality servicing (which you wont always get at a Toyota garage) will sail on (silently and reliably) by.

As I average around 800 miles a week and about an average 10 hours idling time I have noticed that it does seem to make the car more responsive for a while, also I may add that the garage that does my servicing does add FORTE engine treatment every service

What exactly do you mean? I must say I think additives are only of any use when poor quality fuel has been used and clogged the fuel system. People use bio diesel, veg oil, waste oil and then SUPPRIZE problems strat.

I would not mess around with my 2002 D4-D Avensis, but I have 1992 2.4 TD Hilux that might benefit from some fuel system flushing.

I would not be asking for 2nd opinion if this was not suggested to me by 55year old mechanic who changed my oil and suggested filling the new fuel filter with one of those additives to clean the fuel system allegedly.

It has been suggested that most supermarket fuels are of inferior quality hence the slightly lower price, I have been told by several mechanics that these lower grade fuels have slightly more impurities in them as they are not refined to the higher quality to that of the likes of Shell, BP, Total etc . If this being the case then I would suggest that using these fuels may inhibit the cars performance. I myself being a professional driver tend to stick to mainstream fuels suppliers where I can and would only use supermarket fuels occasionally and sparingley.

all precations must be printed on the name plate paper sticked.

but i have been using all variants on previos diesel powered car but no result -- just throw out money.

the best formula is to fill your tank with the best diesel assured by another customers.

this methods works OK.

I agree with Igor on the 'jet kerosene in ratio of 1ltr/20'. Just want to say since jet fuel is not sold at every petrol station the same ratio of ordinary Unleaded petrol does the job.

Personal experience:

Our diesel heater froze 1 night at -15C' and strong wind. The 20ltr heater tank was on top of the truck feeding the fuel to the heater via 10mm metal pipe (no pump just gravity) - no wonder it froze. Problem solved when 1ltr (4 Coca-Cola bottles) of petrol went into the diesel tank - it never froze again. :D
