Ah yes, got that sort of impression from reading his posts and ones made by others.. Thanks for the advice though, I'll be sure to follow it.

I'm guessing the proper Toyota ones aren't the same as the cobra black ones or the running boards that formula4 do?

Luckily I'm not having as much trouble finding light guards.. plenty of them around.. for the right price ;)

Cheers again.

Tom

*edit - Yes, thought about breakers and the similar.. might give a few of my local ones a try, see what the one's they've got in stock are like*

Quick steps question: do they reduce the ground clearance significantly and do they cause any problems with speed bumps, sleeping policemen, or humpback bridges?

Hi snowjoke

In my experience with side steps on both a 4.2 and a 4.3 = No problems with humps, bumps or chumps

Deffinately side steps, got mine delivered today. Sad it may sound but once I got the box open to check them, I got the wife and son to hold a step against the Rav, they look good!!! Just need a break in the weather to fit them !!

Lo Y'all...

I voted for the steps (as I would like those on my Rav)... however.

If Big Red was not actually Red but Black and I'd want to pimp her up a little then I'd go for the chrome bars as I think they'd look better but not as practical...

I've also seen some side steps where they had lights on them which looked good n all... ;)

Regards

Rob

Posted about this before .......

watch out for the black end caps on the Chrome bars! They keep falling off!! I parked up my RAV on Saturday and found the front drivers side one only 1/4 the way in :o

When I refit and re-pop rivet it, it will be the 4th time I wil have had to do that :ffs:

Is it possible to put a thin layer of adhesive inside the cap, then refit it and pop rivet it, sort of belt and braces?

Not sure why the pop-rivets should keep breaking?? it is not like it they are very stressed holding a bit of plastic onto a tube of metal!!

I was going to do a pair of rivets but would have to raid the car to get under to drill, whereas the current single hole just needs a bit of lying down with the gun.

Trouble is it is one of these sudden failure things as well - check it one minute it is ok, but could break the next.

Maybe I'll put a round of gaffertape inside so it is a REALLY tight fit and then rivet it :)

Just a thought.....in my experience pop rivets aren't great with "thick" material, there's not enough room for them to be pulled in and form a proper head before the pin breaks. I wonder in this case if the plastic cap is too thick and the rivet is not forming properly.

Two ideas, firstly self tapping screw with a touch of adhesive on the threads when you are driving it home.

Secondly, a good old nut and bolt (and washer). Glue (or solder) the nut in place, inside our tube, over the hole, dry run to make sure it all lines up and if ok assemble it all, again with a touch of good adhesive on the treads of the bolt.

I'll have to review the options I think. The current fitting position is visible and meant for the neatness of a pop-rivet - that is the original fitting method I am sure (not that that means it is good!).

Maybe I should use a self-tapper and fit in a hidden place?

Can I join this thread, if I'm not too late?

I have my 4.3, I (5'10") have no problems with it, I don't think my wife (5'6") does either.

But we have two littluns, one aged 2.5 who can now just about drag herself up into her baby seat, and one aged 3 weeks who will get there eventually :)

I've no interest in the looks, just the practicality, so I wonder about side steps for the youngsters.

Only one question - I got in and out of a similar car (I think it was an X3) a few times which had side steps, and hated them; as I didn't use them either I had to reach very far out and then down, or they scraped against my calfs. (calves? mooo....)

Anyone noticed anything like this? Or is it that once you have them, you soon adapt?

Thanks :)
