Strange Air Or Fuel "whooshing" Noise

Wendy B

Recommended Posts

Hello

My local toyota garage is having problems diagnosing the problem and therefore the solution! It is difficult to describe but I would say the noise comes from the right hand side of the engine (when sat in the drivers position looking at the engine in front). I had a car with an unreliable fuel gauge a few years ago and the noise when the engine is taking its last gasp of fuel is similar I think. The garage thought they had resolved it by replacing the fuel filter but it is still there. It doesn't seem to affect the performance but I suppose I am cautious as I bought it last November with a 12 month warranty and obviously want to make sure if there is a problem, that it is resolved in the warranty period. The noise is more frequent when the engine is either idle or running in low gear/low speed.

OH - the technical stuff - it is a 54 Rav 4 2.0 D-4D XT3 5 dr with 50,000 miles now. I drive around 250 miles a week.

Has anyone got any ideas please?

Many thanks

HI Wendy

Welcome to the club. I trust you were certified clinically insane before you registered as it will help you understand some of ramblings.

Have a look at this thread;

http://toyotaownersclub.com/forums/index.p...16&hl=noise

The noise was on a petrol but similar to your description. There are also other pointers in there to check. Let us know if these prove not to be at fault.

Regards

Hello

How bad am I at this? I think I just sent you a blank reply?

Thank you for the earlier reply. My dealer has now said that that there is a known "characteristic" on the previous series of Rav 4s - of which mine is one of the later ones I think. This has now been resolved on the current model but there is no effective fix for the previous one and Toyota don't intend issuing one! It is air noise in the pipes apparently.

I asked the dealer to get written confirmation of this from Toyota technical who gave the response above - as well as confirmation that the issue is not going to cause me any problems in the future. They said they would do this.

I have to say it doesn't seem to affect the performance of the car at all and I do really like it.

Are you using the right fuel??

"Scots run on whisky power

Scotch has long been used to warm the cockles, but now a group of Scottish distillers plans to build a £24m combined heat and power plant fuelled by the by-products of malt whisky. The Combination of Rothes Distillers (Cord) will forgo environmentally unfriendly fossil fuels and instead use up the "draff" (malted barley) and "pot ale" residue produced during distillation. According to the Financial Times, the proposed plant would generate 7.2 megawatts of electricity - enough to power 9,900 homes - and would also reduce carbon emissions by 46,642 tonnes a year compared with a coal-fired equivalent. Cord hopes to encourage local homes to take up the power generated through a community scheme."

I've tried using red diesel but it clogs the arteries...

Don't worry about the blank reply, you'll get used to it and in any case we like guessing games.

Air noise in the pipes eh? A new one on me but you might be listening to something we think is normal - if you know what I mean.

I see you've been introduced to our friend bothy. Just in case you ever think of doing anything crazy like drinking chemicals or fuel or even rubbing your back side on a brick but don't know what the outcome will be, just ask him because there is every chance that he will have done it and can tell you in some detail what will happen. He just tries things - usually in his lab during the night.

For some bizaar reason he is also astonishingly clever with motors and has a heart of gold.

Enjoy your RAV and keep in touch with us.

  • 2 weeks later...

This is still ongoing I am afraid. I got the message below back from the Service Manager..... It hardly fills me with confidence - especially after he promised a letter from Toyota to confirm they were aware of this issue - now it seems they weren't!

Mrs B - Reg *******

I was speaking to Toyota regarding your vehicle last Friday

They are not in a position to comment as they have not examined the car.

However they are looking at the problem as a matter of urgency, if a fix is produced then I will be in contact with you and we can then get the matter resolved.

I must assure you that this problem is not causing any ill effect to your vehicle and will not do any damage short or long term.

The banding for your vehicle for tax reasons is F which is £210.00 per year

If I can be any more help please do no hesitate to contact me

Many thanks

Knaresborough - now there's an interesting place!!

Stayed there in a pub/B&B a few times a few years ago - in fact around 1988! Most notable was one night when having a drink at one end of the bar, the girl behind the bar was up the other end having a 'nice time' with a guy. Needless to say we had to wait til they were finished before we could get our pint glasses refilled. It did add a bit of entertainment tho :D :D :D

As regards the car, I would feel somewhat satisfied that you have something in writing. However, it would be nice to know what it actually is. From my experience, I would tend to look around for a specialist engine tuner that focuses on Jap engines for an opinion. I'm not an expert on your engine version, but its likely that the engine is fitted into other cars hence the pointer to a Jap engine specialist. I'd use a search engine, or wear some dark glasses and visit the local magazine store and flick through some of the car magazines for Jap car Performance garages.

needless to say, I do this all the time, but squeezing into a dress for my size (21st) is a hassle...and i need to use knee highs cos tights affect my umbilical hernia. Its one of the reasons I fall everyday - slipping off the high heels B)

Lots of media interest today out my back garden - no it wasn't me waving at the passing traffic on the M74....there was no traffic! The motorway had been shut and dozens of polis cars were aroon the place. Next was 7 gunshots

:2guns: - rather like a shotgun - followed by silence. I learnt soon after that a cattle truck had crashed during the night and that the cows had escaped the scene. 3 had done a runner and whilst 1 was caught, the other was running around the major junction M73/M74/M8 !! It was the latter which I think took 7 shots > whether the marksman/woman found the target is anyones guess. However, there is still a polis alert out as 1 cow is still missing - probably hoofing its way south to freedom (Braveheart - get it?) FREEDOMMMMMMMMMM

According to the radio newsman, it was 2 cows! And they'd escaped following a crash last night - they reckon the cows had either gone to a nightclub before returning to the motorway, or had lain low until the dust settled and morning came, before doing a runner.

Quite funny - police marksmen taking 7 shots to kill a cow- now was it at 30 paces???

It took me 90 minutes to do a 10 minute journey but! And I got my voice heard on the local radio a few times! Dived to the floor when I heard the shooting going on at 8.10am!

Don't worry about the train driver he has probably gone off sick for a month while he has counselling whatever that is.

Bothy are you still a bit miffed about your speeding fine?

Well what a fiasco, sounds like a load of "bull" to me. Pity the train driver couldn't "steer" round it. You don't get this nonsense with agile footed sheep!

Me? Miffed? No. Miffed? No. Not me. See my face - miffed ? No. Not me.

2 dozen marksmen need 7 shots tae take oot twa coos and ahm miffed? No. Cows aren't too chuffed mind. In days not so long ago, it was possible to herd cows to safety. Now we just shoot them. If they have blue tongue, we shoot them. Foot & mouth? we shoot them. And they say we don't have a gun culture in the UK? With drivers we just get shot at wi a speeding gun or laser. How long before its a real gun??

2 months ago, it was a lorry fu of chickens (hens) which overturned. they brought out "chicken catchers" to catch the animals. What I'd like to know is where do these "chicken catchers" rest when not on chicken catching patrol, and who pays for them?

Who pays for the millions of pounds lost today cos 2 cows, dazed from a lorry accident 12 hours previously - yep 12 hours - wandered along the M73/M8/M74 chased by a gang of blue flashing cars, and amateur cowboys???? Dave.M sat in traffic fur 2 hours. Ah mean! Within 200 yards was 3 farms where real farmers cuid have rounded up said 2 cows quickly and efficiently.

No-

we have to shoot the coos - reason ? Members of Al Queda's ranch???

Even a lorry crashed intae a coo. Bet he never sounded his horn! The lorry! Noo, a thocht a coo wis a slow moving animal, not taken tae running at speed doon motorways - ye live an learn.

By the way, wi all ma quotes oan Smooth FM Radio, ah'll be selling ma autograph tae the highest bidders.

7 shots - twa coos - ah still cannae believe it. drive ye tae vegetablesarianism.

 Sorry to split the conversation chaps but had a thought on the noise problem Im not sure of the year this car is as your reg plate system means nothing to me but I was wondering if this might be a coolant noise,if its using the red coolant it would have been changed as part of the service ya now I have seen these not bleed correctly and air gets trapped in the heater pipes resulting in a slushing /gurgling type sound from the right hand side bulkhead area, causes no problem but when you stop the noise starts also as you just take off.

Hedley.

We have nice balance of debating problems and having a lark. When the problem has reached a stage where we are awaiting more info TOC law says its OK to ramble. Its worse for me and bothy because we're getting old and ever so grumpy so rambling sometimes evolves into ranting quite seamlessly.

Sorry!
