I have a similar intermittent problem with my '96 GT. I'll turn the ignition and all the lights on the dash die out. If I take the key out there is a repetitive clunking sound coming from the steering column. If I leave the key in slowly the dash starts to light up again and eventually the car will start again. It's happened about four times in the last two months. I've checked the Battery and it shows as being good. I was wondering if there was a loose connection somewhere.

Hi,

I had a similar problem on my 91 st183 (totally different I know). Turned out to be the solenoid which after stripping (the solenoid that is) a good cleaning and with a nice flat leaded surface sweated over the end, by my tame (proper) mechanic. Starts first time every time. He tells me replacement bits are available for most Toyota solenoids, not of course for the ST183 though. Mike
