I had a similar decision last year, I bought the Golf because it was a decent insurance group (13) & far quicker than anything else I could find. As a bonus it's also great on the juice because it's diesel, it's reasonably reliable, got a good Euro NCap rating & there's plenty of space in it. I also think it's quite good looking but I know that's open to debate. I saved myself 10 grand & spent less than 9 grand at an auction when it would have been around 10.5-11.5k for a similar spec at a dealership. This was last year so I'm sure he'd get plenty of change from 10k now but it's up to him.

If insurance is not an issue I'd buy an old shape Civic Type R, they're a lot quicker & better looking than the Golf & probably a bit more reliable being a Honda

Audi??? but not sure which one

Good suggestion, they're like a rich man's version of VWs so would eat up more of the 10 grand than mine would.

Ask Fidgets what he thought of the S3
