Howdy.

I now have broadband at home so I can while away the 2 hours in the evening whilst 'the other half' gets on with her pampering sessions.

Firstly. I got the turbo off after I realised those little bolts were actually 12 mm AF (NOT 10 mm!!) I removed the head and there it was. A lovely #1 piston which looked like new. All others looked black and normally used. There was a small break in the head gasket between the water way and the #1 cylinder. The piston had around 10 miles of steam cleaning as the sup was nursed home before Xmas.

Leaving the job till better weather saw the same problem happen with my daily runner (1995 4x4 2 litre Mondeo I bought last summer for £400).

I thought that would be an easy weekend job to do. Got top end set and new torsion bolts (£65 all in). Completed the job and the car went 4 miles before the water was turned into steam. Car has become local joking point due to the amount of time I can be seen under it and in the engine compartment plus the odd use of colourfull language. The original set i got seemed to be from a different car and the HG was a metal 4-ply job. Obviously the car was going to be scrapped. However I thought that as none of the other gaskets in the set were any good maybe the HG was a duffer to. I got another one from the local partco (£18) and a tube og hermetite red (needs must as etc). I have just finished the complete job in less that 4 hours and driven up and down the road with no problems (6 miles so far) with the exception of the front wheel bearing has given up the ghost (bugger).

My Supra HG set cost me £42 I do not wish it to be as bad as the Mondeo set.

How can I tell?? :fear:

The voting between Auto and Manual gearboxes is interesting. There was an advertisment on e-bay (still there) for a 1989 3 litre turbo "rare manual model" The advert goes on to say that it turns over but there are some parts missing like tghe propshaft and "the gearbox". It looks a wreck and the current bid is £31. I would get it for the bits of spare trim but scrap the rest. Have a look and see what you think-if you havent already done so.
