Chipping The Corolla

Alright folks! :)

I was bored at work again yesterday, same as every other day  , but after reading a thread on chipping the Auris T180 I thought about if it’s possible to chip the Corolla. I was sure I’d seen a thread saying that it can be done with the Celica with it having two ECU’s (??), but not the Corolla with just the one. Out of boredom I emailed Dastek about the unichip and superchips, and got a reply from Dastek. They reckon that it is compatible with the ‘rolla, but has anyone actually got one?? Or do you think it’s likely that with being possible on the Celica, that he thinks it is as it’s the same engine, but really it’s not? If that makes any sense!! :D

I’m just curious really, not too serious about it – just trying to fill another work day ‘productively’!!

a long time ago someone was claiming he had done it, im sure its possible.

you need an apexi power fc i think its called, this is a programable ecu, you can change all sorts from re maping to changing the point of lift engaging.

these can be baught on eBay for £500 if im correct, but you will need it installing and setting up etc. you also get a remote controll to change or view how the car is operating.

would be awesome to change the point of lift engaging to 5000rpm, i think then that most hatches would struggle to keep up with the cts.

You can get a Camcon controller, bit like the a'pexi power fc but specifically for VVTL-I

It allows you to alter the VVTL-I settings in 500prm increments.

There was a member a while back from Poland who had his CTS chipped giving it 205bhp but he only ran the car for a few months before returning it to stock.

His response when i emailed him last year:

Hi,

I did it in TTC.pl, but I do not recommend this remap. Burnt sparkplugs and very high EGT. Reverted to stock after 20k kms. Fortunately no damage to the engine.

I do however recommend Greddy Celica GTS supercharger kit. Read on it on www.newcelica.org. I have no experience with this kit, but it is surely worth considering.

Hmmmm. That response from the Polish fella sounds quite scary like!!! :o I wonder why it had such an adverse reaction with the Corolla, considering that most cars chip without too many problems?

I’ve read quite a bit on the a'pexi power fc (or what ever it's called! :D ) when I had the Integra. It was a lot of peoples ‘holy grail’ to lower the V-Tec point, but if I remember rightly, all it actually did when properly set up was remove it giving a smooth power curve without the surge. Kinda no fun really…… :(

Saying that it would be nice to have that extra 500rpm with lift though!

thing is toyota will have spent thousands on researching the correct point to have lift set, maybe 6200rpm is the safest being only a 1.8?

hence why ppl are unsure about the reliability if the set point is lowerd. but if only we knew why toyota set it at 6200 if it was only for economy then we would be laughing and i would change the set point to 5000rpm tomorrow lol

as for the supercharger, theyre way too expensive for an extra 15 or so bhp, well thats my opinion anyways :)

Lift on the Lotus engages at 4,000rpm!!

Yes it can be done but it has to be done by a specialist with the ability to hook into the engine management system.

Like others said, the t-sport and compressor engines that live in other cars produce more bhp and work differently. Basically tuned.

Toyota build cars with higher tolerances for reliability but in turn are very difficult to remap. Something about your average high street tuner doesn't have the equipment or ability to hook into the engine management system and have the codes or mappings to tune the engine.

Yeah, that sounds right mate. I wasn't sure why it would have been so difficult, but what you said makes sense. I guess if it was fairly easy and safe a few people would have had it done. Like I say, I wasn't serious about doing it more just curious about it. It's not worth killing my car for a few BHP!

Alright there Norfolk! :D To be honest I'd set lift, or smooth it out at around 4k rpm in the Lotus too. After owning an Elise the thought of lift as we know it is canny scary!!! Impending death springs to mind.....!

There was a guy on here who booked in to have the Dastek fitted, but came away disappointed. Have a search for posts by K19NE_G.

If you're gonna do it; do it properly with an Apexi Power-FC

what sort of gains can be had from throwing a bit of advance at it and running it leaner

on my car at 3krpm AFR is 12.6 , at 5k its 12 which it holds pretty muchh level to 7 where it richens up steadily to 10.8 at the limiter

how "lean" is still safe

results taken at 1500miles ( 2 months ago) bog standard engine , sainsburys super and a little cvl to be safe with dett.

ahhh so you had yours on the rolling road then, nice results wish mine could hit 217.9 bhp instead of 190/200 or whatever its sitting at, have you got a induction kit fitted ?

also was it harsh on your car when they were reving the hell out of it ? im thinking about this TOC rolling road day just a bit worried about how they treat the car.

It'd be no different to you revving the hell out of it!!

For the RR day, just make sure you warm the engine up before it goes on!

lol spose so but when you see them on you tube you hear the car starting low revs and it just goes on forever and your thinking is he going to change gear or what ? lol

my car never sounds like that when im driving it. what do they do? get it moving in 5th very low revs and let the revs go all the way to 8000 odd ? is that why it seems to go on forever?

They usually stick it in 4th as this is a 1:1 with the gearbox. They use the gears, rev it up and then let it coast down to allow the rollers to calculate drive train losses, then they get to idle speed then boot it.
