Avensis 5th Gear Failure

I have a 53 plate T spirit D4D from new. It has now done 67,000 miles and will not stay in 5 th gear. Toyota dealer has quoted 5 hours to take gearbox out at £85 per hour and 2 hours to strip and investigate the problem. I am not impressed. Major drive train component failure at that mileage is unacceptable. Any thoughts?

Ask your dealer to put in an "Out of warranty request" in to Toyota, they may give some consideration towards costs, it may be worth your while as it has only covered 67K

Same problem has just developed on my 53 plate T spirit D4D at just under 64000 miles. Started by slipping out of 5th now won't go in at all. Just bracing myself to have it investigated.

Be interested to hear if you got anywhere with Toyota?

Would be interesting to know Toyotas policy on changing gearbox oil. BMW for example when vehicle is due for Service 2, change all oils including rear diff & gearbox. Or do Toyota have fill & forget policy, never to be changed through life of vehicle ? You would not leave your engine oil to for ex: 60,000 mile major service before changing it for the first time. Are baulk rings not made of brass in Toyota gear boxes which produces swarth which collects & is lubricating box internal's along with oil ? Just something you might ask Service Manager.

Quick update - took it to a Toyota dealer who said they'd look at it while being serviced. When asked if they found anything was advised they want to diagnose the problem by stripping gearbox - at a cost of £1057. I turned down their kind offer. Not happy!

Guess i'll be writing to Toyota but don't hold out much hope.

I'd advise anyone still in warranty who notices movement of the gearstick while in 5th to have it investigated asap.

I had the same issue and the gearstick moving when you accelarate is a dead giveaway! i've had it replaced and 3 months down the line same thing, i'm driving to and from work with the palm of my hand pushing the stick up so it doesnt come out again!

Sooooooo....I bought a recon gearbox very cheap, only prob is i've heard a rumour that a gearbox from a 55 plated Avensis 2.0 D4D manual may not be compatible with a 53 plate :o can anybody help me? none of the garages seem to know (without stripping the engine) and toyota guys are not too helpful..."they have different part numbers" lol i could have told them that.

Guys any help would be greatly appreciated.
