Bike Carrier

Hi all

Does anyone know of a good high mount rear (Does not cover lights) bike carrier that will fit a 2004 Corolla hatchback. I have tried the Halfords high mount one but it seems to unstable when you put 2 mountain bikes on it.

Cheers

Have you tried a real main bike trader specialist or camping/travelling supplier? As they might do better stuff.

I went to one bike stop and they suggested puting them on the roof. For mid range Roof Rack and 2 bike holders its going to cost over £150. Any views on which is best?

I think the high mount, rear rack is best.

Bikes on a Roof Rack on top of the car create far more drag, and takes longer to fit, and is harder to lift the bikes onto.

That said, the Roof Rack solution is probably more secure as you can lock the rack to the car, and then the bikes to the rack. Also the Roof Rack more secure left on the car while you're out cycling. And with a roof rack you can still open your tailgate when its fitted.

Not sure about speed limits, but whereas a car with a Roof Rack is subject to a lower maximum speed, I think that rear mounted racks aren't subject to this. Does anyone else know whether that's true or not?

We have the Halfords high mount rear carier and used it for years on our N Plate (97) Corolla for which it was perfect. I suspect that the newest Halford racks aren't the same design though. The old one was a 6 strap & 2 bike version which worked brilliantly whereas 4 strap systems always seem to be unstable to me.

Got to try to get that rack onto either the Lexus or the MR2 now though as the Rolla is no more sadly.
