Corolla 2003 Ce High Idle

I have a 2003 Toyota Corolla that I bought new from the dealer. It is a great car. I have recently given the car to my father. The problem with the car is that when the car is in park and turned on the idle sits at 1600-1800 RPM. Put it in drive and it drops down to normal and there are no problems. Doesn't matter what temperature or how long you have been driving it. Once it goes into park up go the RPM's. Any and all help welcome. Thanks.

Don't have an answer as such but by way of comparison, I have a 2005 E12 Corolla automatic and, once warmed up, the revs stay pretty much at 750-800 rpm whether in Drive or Park.

Maybe one of the 'techies' here can offer a possible explanation.

Idle can be adjusted fairly easy,

also could be the ecu thinks its taking in colder air then it actually is,(therefore more petrol is added, ie higher idle and abit smokey?)

could be a faulty sensor on the air intake,
