Correct Plugs For A 1 Litre

Hello folks, I'm new here and what I'm needing is a bit of clarification about the right plugs for a 2003 Yaris. According to the Haynes manual the early cars had NGK BKR5EYA's or Denso K16R-U's with a 0.8mm gap, but in July 2001 this changed to Bosch FR7KCU set to 0.9 - 1.0mm or Denso K20R-U11 set at 1.0 - 1.1mm.

My local car accessory shop's plug book lists the NGK BKR's for all the one litre models, regardless of year and a call to NGK's technical advice line confirmed this. Help! I'm confused! Is this advice kosher? Have Haynes got it wrong? And if the original NGK's are still OK for later cars, is the 0.8mm gap still right? :o

Your views/opinions/experiences will be greatly welcomed. :D

Helloooo - anybody out there?

I would have thought choosing one or the other will be ok, I personally went to toyota and got mine.

Thanks for that, Howard - seems a reasonable assumption. Just curious about what could have been wrong with the originally-specified NGK's that Toyota decided to drop them in favour of something else. Which plugs did your Toyota dealer supply by the way?

Incidentally, the reason I didn't go to my Toyota dealer is that it's a fair distance away, whereas I was in the local, very helpful, car accessory shop buying other stuff anyway.

contract probly ran out with ngk and then Bosch an denso gave them a better contract than ngk. i thought all toyota electric stuff was denso? most relays etc and electrical parts in my car have denso stickers on them ive noticed.

I once fitted some Bosch plugs to a Celica engine and when the throttle was floored the plugs would 'pop out' of the threads! I never thought something like that would happen and I could only assume that the plug threads were a little on the small size. After a couple of instances of this happening and re-tightening the plugs in the cylinder head I went back to the standard Denso ones from the dealers. Never had a problem after that and have never used anything else since either.

Shame you haven't got a 'local' dealer, for engine and service parts I've always used Mr T, non-essential bits and bobs like bulbs and fuses I go local :)

Ah, an engineering solution provided by the accountants eh? :o Sounds as if that might well have been it. NGK it is then. Ta all. :D

K16R-U is the correct plug, K16R-U11 is the same plug, EXCEPT it is pre-gapped to 1.1mm

Denso supply all the aftermarket plugs for Toyota, the ones you require are 90919-01176 I can supply them to you, delivered for £15.52 per set of four, genuine Toyota

Doh! I've now bought the 'pre 2001' NGK's, but I'll certainly give you a shout next time up. Don't happen to be able to supply a driver's exterior door handle in blue do you?

Going back to the plugs - what's the difference between the 'pre 2001' Denso K16R-U's and the 'post 2001' K20R-U11's (apart from the wider gap on the latters? :g:
