T Sport Running Problem. Help!

Hi everyone, my Mrs' T Sport ha a big problem...

When you start the engine the engine management light comes on (well it is on now, has been for a while) and the engine idles really irratically. Between 800rpm and 2000rpm. Then when you are driving along the car can start dropping off, then surging a bit.

We took it to a garage and they cleared the light for us saying it was the K&N so we had the standard aibox fitted and the mechanic broke one of the small breather tubes on the airbox, the car is back to running *****e again and the light is back on.

Could it be a breather pipe causing this problem? I'm pulling my hair out now!

Thanks, Tom

It turns out the broken pipe comes from the intake flap thermostat type gizmo (on the back of the air box base) as the valve is open all the time I'm convinced this could make the car run badly in cold weather????

Thanks

Get that pipe fixed first and see what its like then. Ive a typhoon on mine this last 2 years and have had no problems.

If you have an air leak due to a broken pipe you might be able to notice it by a whistling from the engine bay if its sucking air in. If its affecting your idle it probably is sucking air in and it isnt being registered by your MAF sensor, too much oxygen and not enough fuel. I heard a tip once - if your looking for an air leak, you can get some carb cleaner and spray around the problem area with the engine running. If you squirt and the engine reacts then you found your leak.

If your pipe aint the problem, you'd probably be best plugging your ECU in at a local garage to download the fault codes.

Other things that might cause irratic idling could be the Throttle position sensor (TPS) which helps manage the fuel injection.

Idle control value, which can get dirty and mess your idle up and your Lambda sensor (o2), which also helps manage fuel injection.

Good luck ;)

If you are a member of The AA get them out.

I got them out when mine went into Safety Mode (won't rev above 3000rpm)

They have the gadget and can clear most fault codes.

If they can't clear it at least you haven't lost anything.
