Engine Warning Lights

Does anybody know what may cause the engine warning light to come on on my Yaris (1ltr)? The engine runs fine and there has been no change in the performance however the light has been on for aprox 6 months. I've tried resetting the ECU but the light came back on after a couple of days. I suspect maybe plugs or leads but I'm not sure whether it would put up an engine fault code. Anyone have any ideas or experience with this? :(

There's hundreds of things that will bring up the engine light

main one's are

MAF sensor, this is the air flow sensor on your air box.

or sensors in the exhaust.

Take it to a garage who can hook it up to a reader, as there's too many possibilities just to guess.

I'm trying to avoid taking it to the garage as they charge quite a bit to read the fault codes. £60 is a bit steep. Is there no way of reading the fault codes without a test box (OBD tester). With my Mitsubishi, you could earth one of the connector pins for the fault code reader and it would flash up the fault code as a sequence of lights on the dash, which could then be compared to a list to obtain the fault. I would have thought Toyota would be pretty similar with it being Jap. Is there such a list of codes on this site or maybe another method of obtaining the codes?

You need a code reader for toyota cars, doesn't work like the mitsubishi.

Toyota will probably charge you £60, look for a independant garage, some can do it for £30
