Hey everybody .Had this celica for bout 8 weeks now and i changed the oil when i got it, out one night giving it a little, bang engine knocking like hell! It had used nearly all the oil in 8 weeks! can't belive it.

There was no signs of blue smoke at all!,and the oil light never came on.Not impressed!.I now have the engine out and stripped down, and on inspection its spun the bigend caps round scoring the crank on number 1 & 4 jounals,so ive took the crank to be reground and ordered new shells and 2 new conrods aswell as all the other stuff.

I feel sorry for anyone who has to take it to the garage to be fixed,it must be big bucks!

Does anyone no where i can get a manual for this engine, not sure on the timing marks.maked it up with my own for now.

Hi, i'm the someone who has had to take it to the garage. Ahhhh! Just wondering if there are any signs of this dreaded problem as i only had mine for 6 months and wanna know if the place i got it from would have known about it?

Also i could do with some advice with what to do next as its sitting in the garage waiting for me to decide weather to try and repair or just get recon engine? If so how easy is does the 190 go in?

Appreciate any help.

Cheers

What year is your car; later ones have the fix from the factory so should be OK.

As for signs - yes, oil consumption. All owners of early 1.8VVTi engines should check their oil regularly, at least once a week; well, we all should of course, but for that engine it's essential. If your consumption is significant, or starts to increase then keep an even more careful eye on it. And if you currently have FSH then keep it going at all costs; Toyota history is preferable, but if you have had the services done elsewhere by a reputable company, then Toyota may still do the fix for free.

The 190 should go in fine, but the problem is all of the other bits you need to make it work, especially the electrics. I would be surprised if a 190 swap was economical unless you love spending time on your car, and really know what you're doing. It would be better to fix the VVTi and trade it for a 190 in most cases.

Good luck.

Hey,

Cheers for the qiuck reply, it is a 2000 W reg. Had no idea that toyota doing the fix was an option thanks for that, is that just a case of ringing local dealer and trying my luck?

I'm no mechanic so sounds like the 190 idea might be out just thought hey if i gotta get new engine why not.

Sorry to bug but if Toyota is a no go any ideas on best way to get a cheep engine?

Cheers

If you ring your local dealer they will give you the number for toyota customer services which is who you need to speak to.

The conditions for the extended warrenty are - 1. the car must have full serice history, and 2. It must be under 7 years old or have done less than 100 k miles, which ever is sooner.

They stick very firmly to these conditons so as your car is a 2000 you are prob out of luck i'm affraid.

The link for the manuals can be found in the pined thread at the top of the page (celica faq's).
