Went To See A Facelift - Odd Noise When Pulling Off

hi all,

i'm after a facelift celica and went to see one just which was mint apart from one thing.

it had a noise in first gear trying to pull off, the only way I can think to describe the noise was like when you accidentally put your car in too high a gear and it sounds like its "mauling" the engine a bit. Like a shuddery noise.

the noise is only present for a few milliseconds as you're trying to bite and pull off but it doesnt happen when you rev when you're in neutral.

DO you think it could be the clutch? or maybe the gearbox? I really dont know but its the only small thing putting me off buying it

cheers.

ahh right yea my mate said the clutch was "slipping", although the guy showed me his receipt for the new clutch he's had fitted (£200 he paid, £70 part and £130 fitting).

Could a new one drag do you think?

Sounds tlike the new clutch hasn't been fitted correctly.

if its the clutch do you reckon it could be fixed or might it require a new clutch completely?

Depending on when it was fitted, it should still be covered under the fitters warrenty. So it's it's been fitted incorrectly, they should refit it. However it's possible that if you took it in they wouldn't do it, as it was purchased under the previous owner. So you might have to get the current owner to take it in, or speak to the fitters before you buy the car and explain the situation.

yea good point Edwardio cheers mate. I hope its just the clutch and not something more sinister like the gearbox.

Well if it is the gearbox, you can walk away! If it's the clutch, that can be sorted free if it's under warrenty. Speak to a garage/garages that deal with clutches & gearboxes, see what they think it is.

If you could change gear ok and the gears felt fine as you drove in each gear, I'd say it wasn't the gearbox.
