Kickdown Issue

Hi, I own a 1990 Landcruiser VX, Auto, Diesel with 72K on the clock. My vehicle is now showing signs of a problem in that when in drive it happily changes from 1st to 3rd gear and then really has to be cained to get it to change to 4th or 5th. When I look under the bonnet I can see the throttle cable attached to the carburretor and then a series of linkages that ends at another cable that then disappears down into the engine bay. The cable itself feels like it is seized or fixed solid as I am unable to move it and it has bowed or bent in an arch shape.

My questions are:

1. Is the 2nd cable I describe the cable that controls kickdown?

2. Could this be the reason the vehicle does not want to change up to 4th and 5th gears?

3. Is there any other possible solution I should be looking for to the problem?

4. I have also just replaced the radiator and was therefore wondering how much steering fluid I should be putting back into the powerd steering system?

This has happened for no apparent reason as the vehicle is only driven on the road. I have tried to gain support from my Toyota dealer but all he wants to do is replace the gearbox (waster).

Yours in anticipation.

Bob

Find an independent auto transmission specialist.... I have a couple near me and they can be a useful wealth of information.

Good luck :)

When you did the rad the fliud lost was not power steering, it was from the auto gearbox, so check the gearbox levels and top it up, and hope you have not buggered it up by running it low.
