Rear Bumper Removal

I have a 1994 Rav4 with a damaged rear bumper. I've seen a few others with the bumper removed altogether- is this wise? or legal??? Looks OK, better than a knackered bumper, but I don't know..........

I'm not quite sure about the detail - my RAVs have a rear step. The latest one is in the garage so I can't look at that. The one in the driveway has a rear step which is now a bit rusty from various wee bumps - solid tho. I need to paint it I reckon.

I can't see from the Haynes manual what the rear bumper does - it just seems to be a plastic embellishment?

You could call it a step rather than a bumper- it's then standard steel rear end! I assumed it also functioned as a bumper?

In that case, I think I've seen one or 2 without it....don't see any reason why you shouldn't run about like that.
