Buying New - What Are The Extra Charges?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I have been looking into buying a 5door Aygo Blue with Style pack which according to the Toyota Online configurator is £8,245.00 plus £595 for style pack bringing the total cost to £8,840.

On enquiry the salesman has said that to that I have to add the "on the road prep pack" which he said included reg plates, mats and mud flaps and another charge which i cant remember the name of now, but it brought the total to £9300 odd!! I am going to see him on Monday to order the car, but I certainly am not prepared to pay anymore than £8840, in fact I thought he would be giving me a discount!

If I am not mistaken the Aygo Blue comes with mats as standard, and the protected option which would give me mud flaps is only £140! And SURELY to the on the road price means its the price to put it "on the road" so I dont have to pay for registration, plates on top of that!?!

Is someone trying to take me for a ride?

If anyone can give me any haggling tips it would be appreciated! thanks!

On the road prep pack? What a load of tosh.... I never got that with my Blue (I have the Style Pack too)

Tell them you don't want the prep pack and get them to throw the Style Pack in for free and they have a deal. If they say they can't do it then tell them you know someone who got it no problem - that's me by the way  ;)

Don't be afraid to walk away if they don't give you what you want... there are other places that will want your hard earned cash.

Haggling tip: go somewhere else!

Start negotiations at 5% off list price and a full tank of fuel. You will have to pay £35 road tax, so unfortunately that will offset the free petrol.

Being taken for a ride matey...

Ask to speak to another salesman whose not full of it, Plates are paid for in the Post Delivery Inspection (PDI) which is included in the shown cost of the vehicle.

As Em says mats are free in the Blue, mudguards should be no more than £36 a pair (based on Nissan prices but can't be to far off).

The only thing the website is unclear on at a quick galnec is road fund licence which isn't going to much on an Aygo...

You should be able to get a discount on that price unless you have a part exchange they are over allowing on.

I would hold fire until the third or so, March marked the end of the first quarter for the motor industry so the dealership may not know what offers are on next quarter just yet, you may be able to get more discount on one when they know what they are...

Yeah I have a 2004 mini cooper they are giving me £7500 in part exchange, so i guess my discount options are limited. He just quickly listed the prices as I was driving home on friday, and didnt really have a chance to question them, I did kinda say "hang on? what are these extras?" and he said "Well they are options, we can discuss it on Monday". He may be trying to sell me the servicing pack which has bumped up the price, but I am not paying a penny over £8840, I was hoping to get it for around £8500.

I think he wanted me to leave it until April to buy, they certainly didnt seem to be in great demand of my business!

Tell them to shove their "on the road prep pack".... I have never heard of such a thing and I tend to think they are lying about it

I agree with Demonic Angel and suggest you go for the 'Style Pack' as a freebie.... the cost of this pack is within their profit margin so press very hard when you haggle the final price :)

Don't let them pull the wool over your eyes which is what I think they are trying to do

Good luck

Looks like you are being taken for a ride.

Got my Platinum 5 door 3 weeks ago with the protection & a/c - this came out at £8885. I managed to knock them down to £8500 & got a full tank of petrol & a free boot liner (worth £31). The tax is supplied free by the dealer. They do tell you that they don't give big discounts on the Aygo as their margins are very small. I said I would go for a Peugeot 107 if they couldn't match close to their price - this seemed to do the trick. Check out the Peugeot price & use it as a bargaining tool - as said before, go to a different salesperson or offer to walk away if your not satisfied. You should be paying less than the list price not more!

The only thing I would say though, is that all Aygo's particularly the Blue are in very short supply at the moment - this could work against any good discounts at present.

Hope this helps.

Hmmm he originally told me there would be a long wait on an Aygo Blue as they were in short supply, then he phoned me on Friday to say that Toyota had changed their car codes and that his computer hadnt been displaying all the cars available, and that he could get me a blue 5dr with style pack in 1 to 2 weeks. I smell a rat!

One big rat - the salesman. Kick him into touch. The saleswoman I had was excellent, seems like you just got unlucky. Try calling another Toyota dealer to check delivery times etc. Could be he's been telling a few porkies or could just be incompetent???

I'd go to another dealer to be honest - as others have said the toyota prices are 'On the road' and don't need anything at all added to them, they include registration fee, road tax etc.

Is it any wonder car dealers have such a bad reputation?

Don't worry. I am doing my research, going to get some quotes from Citroen and Peugeot, and am going to phone another dealer. In Belfast all toyota garages are owned by the same private company :( so am going to my old home town 30 miles away and enquiring there.

Toyota also tried to pull a fast one on us in a similar fashion. Went in fully armed with specs and prices as we were there to negotiate. Salesman did is his 'magic' and price was over £700 more than the official on the road price (which included delivery, first reg fee, one years tax and a full tank of fuel).

Needless to say the screen was very complicated, but I had a quick scan and saw GAP and Supaguard both as 'standard' items on the quote at more or less £350 each. I queried this and was told it was 'standard' as most people wanted them!

We didn't so asked for a basic price, needless to say this needed him to disappear to go into the back office, no doubt to have a chat with his mate. Eventually the true OTR price appeared, in the end we bought of a broker as the underhand tactics really put us off. We haven't been back to this dealership since.

Haggling tip is get a quote from some online brokers.

I have loaded myself with print outs and quotes, what is GAP? I will make sure that it and supaguard are not part of the price he is quoting.

None of the other Toyota garages in Northern Ireland were very helpful on quoting me a delivery date, all places said it would be 2 - 3 months before I could get an Aygo Blue, so I dont know how he is able to get me one in 1 - 2 weeks. :-S

I have a quote for a Citroen C1 which is the exact same spec at the Aygo Blue and it comes in at £8500, so I will be showing him that.

Unfortunately living in Northern Ireland means online brokers charge an extra £200-£300 to deliver :( which kinda negates the saving.

GAP is a nice earner for the salesman - it's an insurance policy to cover losses on finance should the car get written off, or pay you the difference between what you are offered and what you paid for the car. Most insurance companies offer a new car if it gets written off in the first year anyway.

....Most insurance companies offer a new car if it gets written off in the first year anyway.

That is true to a point.... generally the damage has to exceed 60% of the cars value

I think GAP insurance is worth it and I know my salesman made £29 out of it when he sold it to me :)

GAP is usually for three years, and is particularly useful in years two and three. If your car is written off, it pays the difference beteeen what your insurance company pay out, and the price of buying a new car, which can be considerable on some cars. Just like all insurance, it is completely worthless if you dont have to claim, but when you do need it........

And how much is it for an Aygo?

The GAP cover is £300 for the Aygo and well worth it.... my 9 month old Yaris was written off back in 2004 and luckily I had the GAP cover else I'd have been a couple of grand out of pocket!

I paid extra for the GAP cover for the Aygo, but should the worst happen it's well worth the money IMO....

Have a look at the website - click4gap. I have not used it so can't recommend it, but their price is around £94 for 3 years almost a quarter of what Toyota are charging. I was offered the options of GAP & supagard (see my previous posting titled supagard?) after I agreed the price of the car. I declined both. Most people reckon a good polish is just as good as the supagard - it is personal choice though. I told the Toyota guy about the Gap price at £94 & he just said it could be some unreliable website, I just think he was embarassed by his high price.

As regards your Citroen price. £8500 seems pretty high for a Citroen - is it a new model?. My dealer said they don't compete with the C1 as its an inferior product - especially when it comes to service & aftercare - they do go head to head with the Peugeot.

Hope this helps. Keep us posted.

Erm they arent doing you a favour taking it off your hands. Beleive me they'll make money on the Cooper.

Its a mass-produced car so I'd EXPECT a discount on list price. If he says no, phone another Dealer. If he says 'look best I can do mate', giving you the guilt-painful-disappointed voice. Walk. Dont hang around. I reckon two calls max and you'll get the discount, mats and petrol.

Ps. when I bought my Aygo I PX'd a 2000/W reg Volvo S40 2.0 with roof damage and abit tatty for next to book value.

I got the quote of £94 based on the car price of £8500 as Jeff was asking for the GAP price for the Aygo. It looks like the premium price increases in tow with the value of the car.
