Hi everyone,

I've had my Aygo since October 2005 and have a variety of problems with it, for example its had the front seats replaced as they squeaked, the carpet replaced as it wore a hole after 8000 miles, a new exhaust, numerous little things. Its a 1.0 petrol + model with a manual 'box.

Anyway for a while now the gears seem to have been harder and harder to select, then last Thursday coming home from work it got stuck in 2nd gear. I pulled over and had to REALLY force it into gear. I only live a mile or so from work so I limped home. The following morning I phoned my Toyota Dealership who said to pop it in straight away, which I did. The mechanic sat in the car, tried to select gears and quickly diagnosed a clutch or gearbox failure!!!! Its got to go in again Tuesday for the gearbox to be removed from the engine for examination and review.

I'm absolutely gutted as its only got 23700 miles on the clock, and the mechanic made it very clear that the clutch (if at fault) is not covered by the remaining 7 months of manufacturers warranty!!!! As I am in the middle of buying a flat I have no money for repair (and was the whole point of buying a new car!!!).

I use the car for commuting to and from work, and general social activity. I bought the car as it was cheap to use and as I get a good mileage allowance from work I make money when I drive it. Its never been treated badly, although I admit I'm not one to keep it clean.

If it is the clutch and Toyota refuse to cover it under warranty what can I do?

Cheers,

A.

buy a clutch your self ;) AYGO has a weak clutch, but it's very easy to replace it even with no garage :)

I could but why should I? To me a clutch that fails after just 23700 miles is more than just wear and tear.

This is a difficult one, as a clutch can wear more or less depending on the driver.

If you constantly ride the clutch it WILL wear faster... And if you drive on the motorways for long distances you'd

probably shift less, thus would have less wear; I used to know someone who drove 200km every morning and evening,

never got really stuk in traffic, so could get on the motorway, put his car (a Peugeot 405) in 5th gear and leave it there

for most part of his journey. His clutch needed replacing after 300.000km FROM NEW, which is very extreme...

This exact same difference is why such parts usually are not covered by any

warranty, unless the fault is clearly due to a production/manufacturing error...

I would say that 80% of the driving I do is on the motorway, the rest is small A-B Roads. Because of this I cant see why it would fail. Plus I've never riden the clutch, I've owned 6 cars and never needed the clutch doing on any of them...all had way more than 23k miles on the clock too!

It doesn't sound like a worn clutch plate anyway. If it's the clutch it's the mechanism rather than the plates so surely that would be a warranty job.

Good luck with it.

might as well enquire about it my clutch wore after about 12,000 mile i think and it was replaced under warranty.

Before the 'box is removed check the gear selector cables ends that are located on a bracket at the top of the gearbox. Ive seen a few of the metal ends crack, making it hard to get the gears.

Mart. :)

Cheers for all responses.

Update - The car is still in the garage. I received a call yesterday to say that the radiator (that I had always claimed was leaking from day 1) had a crack in it and was, surprise, leaking. They had apparently not got to the point of investigating the gearbox yet.

I have no issue with the garage, they are polite and friendly. However I have issues with the quality of the car, mine seems to be a real rogue! I'm expecting a call today with news.

Cheers all,

A.

well, I dont want to be rude, but do you know what u have bought? And how much does it cost? :) It's normal that it has weaker quality, then some Yaris.

It's off topic, but to my mind Toyota went a bit tooooo far with cheapening out AYGO.

Final Update:

The clutch release bearing and clutch had failed, both replaced under warranty. They also found the water pump was failing and they replaced that too, along with the radiator which they discovered was cracked yesterday.

!Removed! pleased its under warranty, in 2 1/2 years its had:

- Front seat frames replaced

- Exhaust replaced

- Carpet replaced

- Radiator replaced

- Water pump replaced

- Clutch plate replaced

- Clutch Release Bearing replaced

I'm preying thats it...no more problems please!

Thanks for advice everyone!

You do appear to sound rude!!

We all know what we bought & how much it cost. In my case a lot of thought & research was made before purchasing.

OK the Aygo is a cheap option when buying a new car - but when paying in the region of £8,000 you're entitled to expect a quality product - especially with the Toyota brand. The Aygo is what it is - a good quality, cheap, economical green car.

Whatever you buy in this world you are going to be either lucky or unlucky with it. Going by the messages on this forum, most people seem to be more than happy with the Aygo.

You say you still have 7 months left on your warranty so the clutch should still be under warranty

my aygo goes in next week for a complete clutch assembly 19000 miles they have told me it is

covered under warranty.

contact toyato customer service dept, or toyato GB. all the best
