First Gear Feels Like It Is Wanting To Jump Out?

Hi,

I have noticed that my car, Avensis 53 D4D T Spirit, that when I change from 1st to 2nd gear, it sometimes goes with a jolt, as if it was trying to jump out of gear already. This seems to be getting worse and also it is sometimes a little hard to put it in first (only slightly tho). I am not sure whether it is my driving though, as it doesn't do it when I purposefully change gear slowly and properly, just when I do it quick in normal driving, could I possibly be catching it somehow and forcing it out? It seems to do it more when the car is cold.

Can anyone offer any advice on this, I visit this site regularly and have not heard of this problem before.

Also, since I bought the car in Jan, it has been a little tricky to put into reverse, sometimes it just doesn't engage, so I have to do it again, can this be remedied anyway!

Thanks in advance for any advice offered!

d4d gear boxs are quite notchy.

check fluid levels, if not change gearbox fluid.

Hi,

Thanks for your advice, I am not very good with cars though I'm afraid. How do I check the fluid levels, and/or change the gearbox fluid?

I now think that it may be jumping out, or feeling as if it is trying to because I'm changing gear too quickly and not pressing the clutch right down, could this be it?

The thing is when I di it slower and completely depress the clutch, the car loses momentum and then jerks when the next gear engages!

I will have a look at my manual, will this explain how to chack and change gearbox fluid, is it juat oil? Or a special gearbox fluid?

Thanks again for your help.

Mine did/does that from new! Its like there isn't much keeping it in gear (1st only). Move it slightly and it jumps into neutral. I assumed it was normal for that gearbox (6 speed 07 plate D4D)

I dont think you are driving the car in its power band.

Test drive your car like this..

1st gear... clutch up gas down ...

let revs rise and speed rise.

When revs are at 2.3k > 2.5k (should be going about 12/14mph)

change to 2nd gear, keeping 1/4 throttle open. same with 3rd..

The clutch needs to be down to the floor before you change, .. especially in the lower gears.

@sam1 your car is new, it will need to be beded in,

Hi,

Thanks for the advice, I think I've solved it, I don't think I was depressing the clutch right down when changing from 1st to 2nd,and/or I was still slightly acelerating, it doesn't do it now I purposefully press it right down and take off the gas, BUT, it does cause momentum to be lost cause it's taking longer to change gear and so a slight ***** occurs when it catches the next gear. If I continue to drive as I was and change gear quickly, (with the gear kinda jumping from 1st to 2nd) will this damage anything?

BTW, I usually change up around 2000 revs regardless of speed, is this too low?

PS is there seperate oil tank for the gear box, or gear fluid? How do I check this, and top it up, I can't see owt in the manual.

Thanks in advance guys!

Ah, I think I've sussed it, thanks for the advice.

I was changing up to 2nd way too slow, if I use 1st to get to 10-15mph and then change it doesn't do it!!

Thanks!!

Thanks for the advice... I will certainly try that! To be honest I thought I changed around that speed/RPM, but I will make special attention tonight when I drive home! I think I am also a bit lazy when it comes to depressing the clutch fully!

I did check the manual when I got the car and I think it said to not use any one gear for any lenth of time... I can't remember anything else - is there anything I should do/look out for when bedding in the gearbox? I've done 20k miles already so probably too late!

Yh i think you should check your gearbox fluid ASAP cus it may lead to even worse problems if its low.

Thanks again!
