I have a 2001 vvti rav4 which I have owned for 2 weeks. This morning the management light came on and the speedo is not working, any ideas?

Hi Jim and welcome to the club. Pretty sure we've had something similar before and it was just the plug on the speedo sensor. This is down near the back of the gearbox by the driveshafts. Take the plug off and give it a squirt with WD40 to see if that cures it. We had a similar one the other day but that didn't have the dash light (I don't think). It depends on the nature of the poor connection as to whether the ECU will have picked up no speed sensor input.

Try that first and then let us know what happens.

Cheers

water into a multiblock down in one of the kick panels under dash, cant remember which side (i think drivers)

Comes normally from the sunroof leaking, from memory, Clean the large multiblock and spray with wd40 and then wrap up with tape

Then sort you water leak

I have removed plug and wd40'd still the same.

Light came on this morning AA said speedo sensor fault, then noticed speedo wasn't working.

Fault code is P0500!!

- vehicle speed sensor or circuit fault

Looking at the Haynes manaual, there is a crankshaft position sensor which is mounted on the timing chain cover next to the crankshaft pulley. this sensor provides info on crankshaft position and speed to the ecu. If this is faulty i guess it would lead to engine running problems - its a favourite failure on Jaguar engines.

The Vehicle Speed sensor VSS is located on top of the transaxle - producing a pulsing voltage signal. It helps to control the fuel and ignition system via the pcm (ecu).

I'm not sure which side the fuses etc are for this but it must be a wiring fault nearer the speedo if the engine is running ok.

Do I need a sensor from Toyota or an electrician?

sorry - I edited my post with some more info while you posted the last question - I'd go for an auto-electrician.

Kingo will price you the sensor.

How do I get in touch with him?

He awakens at 5am, has his raw egg and bacon breakfast and drives in his brand new Toyota made up from parts sourced from excess bits in his warehouse to arrive at 9.30am.

Or if you can't wait, you'll find him as Parts King operating within Lindop in Queensferry area. Once found (eg find one of his posts) then click on his profile and send a personal message = PM.
