Turbo Problems

First of all i would like to say hello to everyone, I'm a new member who is having problems with a gt4 st185 import,

I have have noticed there is no boost what so ever being produced by the turbo, the in-dash boost gauge also no longer moves, Is there anything obvious or i should be looking for on this model ?, Is it more likely to be a mechanical or electical problem

if it's not pulling like the turbo's boosting then it could be a snapped shaft in the turbo, if it still pulls like its boosting then the boost sensor may be faulty or disconnected

or it could just be a split hose

You were spot on GTForbes, I removed the turbo today and found the shaft had snapped, I've now got to remove the cat because the part that has sheared off has dropped down in to it,

Can someone advise me on a good supplier for a turbo and what i should expect to pay

TCB, toyota celica breakers down in cornwall should be able to sort you out and normally next day delivery, you'll need to do a search as i've lost their details.

would it be a good time to mention how much of a good mod a de-cat is ;)

Can i get away with gutting the cat ? , or will the mot emissions test be a problem

if its a 185 then it wont need a cat to pass the mot. think it was from 94 onwards u needed 1. u can gut the cat but i think this is a bad idea. im not to sure what the cat is like on the 185 but on the 205 its very wide and i could imagine this cause boost problems if it was gutted. look for a de cat pipe for the best results. eBay or fensport should help u source a few

bang for buck the XS power down pipe is as good as anything. aussie is a bit better fitting but a fair bit more to boot.

beware of second hand turbos, you can get yours rebuilt and a mild hybrid done on it for £400-£600

when i bought my car i was told that it had an aussie down pipe, now i assumed that the cat would have been removed, but he said that it was still fitted he told me that sum 'world class tuner' had told him that if you remove the cat it can cause problems with ur turbo spooling up? can someone tell me if the guy i bought my car off has blown stoor up my *****?

if you have a decat and 3" exhaust you can get an issue with boost creep but is will come on boost quicker. if your running a 2 1/2" system then you wont have an issue

i think the guy u have bought it off meant if has an aussie exhaust (cat back) a down pipe replaces the cat with a straight pipe from the turbo. u prob have an aussie mid section

easy enuf to tell if u have a down pipe on. on the side of the turbo that connects to the exhaust (standard will have a heat shield over it) u will see a 3inch pipe attached. if there isnt a downpipe there will b the big bulky cat thats about 4 times as thick and it rite up at the turbo. feel free to take a pic and send me it and i will tell u. just shout and i will give u my email.

Mate when u take a cat of and see the honey comb inside u will see how restrictive it can be on the gt four! I know other people that have just gutted the cat ie just taken all the honeycomb stuff out. A 3 inch down pipe can cause boost creep so if it was me I would go for 2.5 inch system or 2.75 inch. It does increase the power and does give it a better noise. So in short.. yes its is worth it. If ur looking for bigger power this is one of the 1st mods I would do

was aware that powerflow made a down pipe mate, i have a powerflow back box and i love it. would be interested in a powerflow downpipe if they wer available in a 2.75 size and the fitting was good. dont know any1 that has 1 of these
