hi all,

what size disks do i need for a vvti 2001 celica? 255mm or 275mm?

i need them for the front and the back got grindin noises all round when i brake so planning on replacing everything.

Is it easy enough to do yourself? or is it worth it just to give to a garage?

It will be the smaller ones as only the 190 had the larger ones before the facelift, then the vvti got the same as the t-sport (i.e the bigger ones)

As for changing them the front are a doodle, the rear slightly more difficult as the handbrake operates in the inside of the rear disc's. If you are resonably skilled then really would do it yourself. I changed mine for grooved disc's and EBC Green pads. about 2-3 hours max.

cheers mate, yea ill prob do it myself ill replace the front 1st, cant replace them all at the same time otherwise ill have no brakes lol. what sort of price range do u think im looking at for new pads n disks ?

im only replying coz i'm in the market for some 140 discs and pads, but on eBay they can be had for £75 delivered. Do you think this is a good price? As I have no idea.

i was looking at them aswell. i was also looking at the grooved discs with greenstuff pads all round for £250 im just waiting for my local garage to get back to me to compare prices

I'd say get the 190 disc fitted instead. That's what I'm doing when I have to replace mine, as if its going to help th car stop better I'm all for it.

I assume you know you will also need to change the Calipers to accommodate the larger Discs.

£75 delivered sounds too cheap for decent Discs, Black Diamond can be had for £150-£200.

no it was 250 just delivered, its hard to find someone to fit them so i was just gunna do it myself. anyways i went to toyota for a quote and they told me that my brakes are fine another 5-6k miles left in them pads and discs he said. still want to find out wat the scraping sound coming from the nearside wheel is thou. any ideas?

well i have done a great school boy error today ordered some ebc grooved discs and pads for the front on my celica fitted them only to find somehow id ordered rear pads. anyhow not ever even seen brake pads before i managed to fit them to the front. put the wheels back on and guesswhat brakes didnt work id noticed the pads didnt fit very nicely anyway. i then noticed they were for the rear of the car lol so i had to go by some just standered front pads and they fitted in just perfect. but id bent the little metal plates between the pads abit oops anyhoo ive got ebc pads for the rear now and my question is do the rear pads change just as easily as the front?

Right I need to change my discs as they're warpped. I've been looking up which ones to get, problem is some sites say I need 275mm for a 2002 plate and other give me the choice of 255mm or 275mm.

I believe I have 255mm on at the moment when I had them changed 2 years ago, but the discs look too small as their diameter doesn't reach the edge of the guard like the rears do.

So I think I need 275mm. Agree?

pre face lifts 99>2002 255mm on the front and 275mm on the rear post face lift 2002> 275mm all round :D

youve probally done this already buy on the fronts its a doddle as there is 2 14 mm bolts at the back which you take off to remove the caliper, put in the new pads, using a g clamp push the piston back into its housing, with your fingers push the gromits that the 14 mm bolts locate into up a bit, slide it back on and presto.

with the rears there is 2 pins that you have to knock out, remove wheel, remove springs and pay close attention to the way they go, knock out the pins, remove the old pads and the anti squeel shimes, as probally one has turned to rust,

replace pads (you may have to fiddle about to push the piston back into the housing) replace anti squeels, knock in the pins and the springs,

when i done my rear pads i ended up removing the caliper as it was easier to get to the pins,

Sound advice kev.....

Personally if you can find set of front calipers off a 190 for cheap it is worth doing.... the 275 disc and pads are a lot cheaper then the smaller 255 ones.

Eh?? it's 2 brake calipers - not a job lot of Gold Bullion !

Buyer pays postage usually anyway. Strange !

A lot of good advice on this topic thanks. Just thought I'd add that as the cars get older (mines 10 years old now ) , the pins on the rear calipers can be a nightmare. They rust and are very difficult to budge . I have a dremell-like tool that was ideal for sanding the rust of the pins in situ (the corrosion makes them too big to knock through the tight hole theyre in). If you dont want to completely remove the calipers and therefore have to rebleed the system, make a platform out of bricks and top it with wood. This give a solid base to rest the caliper on to whack it out with a centre punch and hammer. A spray oil may help too but keep it away from piston seal, disk and new pads. Also good to choose a day when you are not up against the clock.

I drive a 2000 VVTI Celica. I've just got a TRD bodykit installed on it now I want the best and largest brake discs money can buy :P

Can anyone recommend the best quality brake discs for the car? Are there any TRD Brake discs available at all?

You can still get a TRD bbk for the front, but you'll be parting with over £1k for that! Other than that you can get a Wilwood bbk made up for about £650 ish (which is what I run) from FreakyParts on Celica Club, or the other option is front & rear AP Racing kits from Se7en Motorsports.
