Went for my service yesterday, I was told that my front discs and pads needed replacement as they were lipped. Seems strange as last year (6k miles ago), the brakes were inspected and had at least 85% of life left in them. Anyway I have been quoted £190 :o by Toyota and £135 by a local independent.

A wear lip is normal!!! The wear limit on Aygo front disc width is 18mm. New discs are 20mm wide. Measure them first!!! If a customer doesn't know this info then it's easy money for a garage to take/make

I've done 35,000 miles and still have life left.

You can buy EBC discs for £25 each. £100 for new discs, pads and labour is a good deal

I've only done 16k miles. Never had a problem with brakes going quickly on my previous cars, so don't think I brake too hard/often. In general terms they don't feel as good as when the car was new, but in the same respect they don't seem to be squealing or feel like i have Fred Flintstone brakes!!! Maybe it's a classic case of stealer making easy money (also said I needed a new rear wiper, as it was split??? Didn't notice this)

I was told that my discs had a wear lip at my first service at 6800mls. I have noticed that the brakes do look slightly worn, but I have never replaced a set of discs on a car until they have done at least 20,000mls. As my annual milage is 6k per year, I will be annoyed if I have to replace them in the 3 years I plan on keeping the car.

I work in the motortrade and have noticed that discs dont last like they used to, and generally need changing when the pads need changing. I believe it is the poorer quality materials used today.

But, I think the reason the Aygo pads and discs wear so fast, is that the abs and esp systems are far too sensitive, and cut in too easily wearing the pads and discs.

Could also be the case that manufacturers are using harder pads these days.
