The Mobile Phone Saga........

Hi folks,

collected the XT5 D-4D on Monday - definitely not disappointed other than with the lack of a spare wheel. Got the tow bar ordered and the electrics kit + an iPod kit from Kingo ( God bless him! ). Decided, without a great deal of confidence, to try my luck with the mobile phone connection this morning. It's a Nokia and it wouldn't connect. Went down to the Carphone Whorehouse armed with the Toyota Owners Manual and the knowledge gained from reading the forum. Explained the problem and asked to try some of their phones in the car. The Sony Erricson K800i worked fine straight out of the box - no supprises so far. Told the assistant I was currently with Orange. She informed me that I could have the same phone £10 cheaper if it was branded as Orange. She got one out and spent a fruitless half hour trying to get it to talk to the car kit. She then went to speak to the engineer who said it was likely to be a software issue AS THE SOFTWARE LOADED INTO A BRANDED PHONE WAS CONSIDERABLY DIFFERENT TO THAT LOADED INTO THE GENERIC VARIANT. He thought that one of the reasons that branded phones were cheaper was the cut down version of the manufacturer's software probably a reduced licence fee arrangement. The generic version of the phone was then reconnected without problem.

Not sure what the moral of this is but we can hardly lay the blame for the problem on Mr T if he not only has to test the manufacturers software on his in-car system but all the variants developed by the different service providers worldwide. The same problem sometimes occurs in the software industry when programmers don't stick to standards - usually ends up with Microsoft getting it in the kneck for that. It's hardly supprising that Mr T hasn't got a list of compatible phones though.

Maybe the first thing to try if you have connection problems is getting the phone unlocked and the generic software loaded? It's not so easy if you use a company mobile though.

Best regards

Chris

PS Kingo's i-Pod kit was out of stock and has to come from Japan - should be here by middle of next week. Is it possible that he moonlights as a pilot for JAL?

Kingo owns JAL.

Enjoy the new car mate!

Seems to be a too-common problem, this one

How about people post the phone they have (and if it is network branded, OEM, etc) and their car so we build our own database of compatible phones, at least as an initial start? :)

On the subject of compatability, Toyota dont do a list as mentioned, however, they DO recommend you always download the latest software to your brand new phone, the N95 and others wouldnt connect with the original settings but have been OK with a firmware upgrade

I did an upgrade to my own phone last night, I have now deleted all the sh*8 ringtones that came with with it and produced my own from favourite songs, I can feel a whole new career coming on.........better than flying JAL everyday

Kingo

'tis a bit mad. The link to the list of phone posted by sheathy in this thread:

http://toyotaownersclub.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=78003

list again:

http://www.toyota-europe.com/own/bluetooth...th_connect.aspx

has the Palm treo 650 as being completely incompatible, yet mine works with the XT5/T180 kit. Admittedly I had to upgrade the operating system of the phone and bulk transfer and Battery indication doesn't work, but apart from that it seems to be OK.

bluetooth is supposed to have a set of protocol standards and they should be just that - standard IMHO. I expect there's an irrational explanation for it all, perhaps I should research it a bit more, before I vent my spleen. I agree it's not all (if any) Toyota's fault.

Thanks (not!) for reconnecting my neurons related to Brother Hood of Man Chatman!

As for headsets....you mark my words, you'll all get converted to cybermen . The office looks full of them already :robot: :help2:

Yeah and the only reason you have to get up early for that train of yours is to get the boiler going 4hrs before I suppose. Still, no traction problems with leaves I guess.

It's not I'm afraid, the bluetooth on the XT5/T180 is built into the sat-nav unit. The XTR has an after market Motorola kit (which is very good, I must add)

Mine isn't 'very good' yet: I couldn't get it to respond to my voice let alone link to my phone. (I might have known that that bit wasn't Japanese!) Got it booked in to the dealer for a possible replacement unit and I'm hoping that it will work with my Treo 680 when it's sorted.

The rest of the car (900 miles so far) is fantastic.
