hi there everyone...

im 21 and bought a st185 st4 turbo 2day...before this day all ive ever driven is a vw golf 2005 1.4 so as u can see im a real amateur in the world of cars...

anyway, the car handles great and all seems fine...

my question is regarding the turbo....sometimes when im on gear 2 and press all the way the car doesnt instantly speed up...then u can here the turbo kick in and it starts to fly...same with gear 3....its just im not too sure about this delay...is that normal??...

what is the best way to drive a turbo and get the most out of it...it all feels a bit strange to someone who's only ever driven a standard golf!

also i was doing 80mph on gear 4, and stepped on it...and the car literally woudnt budge from 80mph for like 5secs. then i released the accelerator and pressed again, and then it somewhat responded...

i guess what im really asking is whats the best way to drive a turbo...sorry for being a complete stupid newby!

sounds like turbo lag, the time it takes for the turbo to spin fast enough to make boost. as long as its standard it should make boost at about 3-3.5k rpm.

get a boost gauge fitted to make sure it is boosting properly (the one in the dash is more of an indicator than a gauge)

Ya look up turbo lag on good old google that is what you're experiencing. And yes it is normal I got the esact same car (just about) and my turbo usually wont kick in till sometime after 3000RPM. But definatly buy an aftermarket boost gauge, because its hard to really say if the amount of lag u have is normal without one. The whole part about 5seconds to break away from 80mph seems a bit unhealthy to me... mind you i'm still somewhat new to the car as well.

yea the 80mph thing doesnt sound rite to me. surely at 80mph u are at about 2500 rev. shouldnt take 5sec to boost
