So finally am getting round to doing the metal head gasket i bough some weeks ago from kris at gtfours.co.uk (was very good with advice). Only thing I was wondering when puttin it all back together are there any areas that need special attention before re-fitting to prevent such happening again? A friend of mine is doing the job and said maybe about puttin extra sealant on the weak area(s)? Any help would be appreciated. Also anyone who has done such a job are they ok do do or an absolute B@~'*#?Am doing the job this weekend when the arp head studs turn up from fensport :)

dont think u need to worry about weak areas then. I had a problem with my st205 a few months back and the mechanic told me it was the head gasket but when i asked on here i was told the head gasket on the st205 never goes so when we looked further in2 the problem we found it was a blown piston. so in answer to your question, i would just leave it as it is cause there is more chance that u will blow a piston before the head gasket goes from the st205. is it the standard 1 or the thincker 1.6 mm 1. and im guessing its brand new cause u can recycle these things

Ok sure thanks for the advice. Pretty sure its a standard one ( i assume 1 mm ). I work at a car dealership n the guys assured me it was hg that was causing my oil leak . Currently is only leaking oil down onto g/box area just want to get it sorted before causes any more problems e.g water in oil/ oil in water. She ain't using much oil so I don't think its bad just glad caught it in time. I think the problem is more common on 185's ( mine ) than ur later 205. Have got the arp bolts today better do a good job as they are !Removed! expensive!!! Nearly £150 for 10 studs n nuts. But apparantly are a good thing to have on the car.

Am looking to up the boost soon after the job is done whats the best and most reliable method of doing this? Also going to go cat back s/s exhaust system with or without aussie downpipe, as haven't decided whether the downpipe is necessary. Also mine is a '92 is getting rid of the cat and fittin a downpipe ok for the dreaded MOT?

Thanks

Olly

make sure you remove all traces of the old gasket from the head and block. fine grade emery around a piece of flat straight steel is best and use WD40 as a lube. when they are both clean stick in the HG (if it is a 205 one going in a 185 then there are a couple of holes to drill, use old gasket as guide).

for boost increase and electronic boost controller is the best way to go. bleed valves should be made illegal as they arnt reliable enough and relief valves arnt a whole load better.stick with 1.0 bar and all should be well. do not get a fuel cut defender as fuel cut is there for a reason.

aye, standard 205 one is 1.2mm, as above the new gasket will need a couple of holes drilled into it for water channels, good choice on the bolts as i wouldn't want an engine going back together without them now. as for boost 1 bar is all you really need, after i got my MHG put in all i ran was 0.9bar along side an E-manage for fueling as once you go above IIRC 12psi ~0.85bar your injectors can start running 100% duty as a safety feature. downpipe is a must mod if your turning up the boost, the cat on the down pipe is too big a restriction and will cause increased engine bay temperatures on long periods of hard driving and high boosting, as for the stainless system, if your not intending on going for over 350bhp i'd just get a blueflame stainless system off of e-bay, thats what was on my last and will be on my next untill it becomes a restriction ;)
