Can anyone help, our C4D packed in last Sat, it just wouldnt start. We called the AA who did the diagnostic test and said it was the Battery. We couldnt get a Battery strong enough from anywhere so we bought a booster to put us on. This started the car fine. We ordered a Battery from Toyota and got it yesterday, other half fitted it but the problemis still there. It starts pretty fine even without the booster when its cold but when its warm it won't start at all even with the booster. I'm a bit gutted that we've wasted £65 on a new battery especially as its gonna cost more to fix whatever it is that really broken.

Any ideas? Do you think it could be the heater plugs?

Hi

Sorry to hear about your problem, i've just spent £96 on a Battery if that makes you feel better. :(

If the car starts OK when cold but not hot it isn't your heater plugs.

I would suggest it may be your starter motor as i've noticed quite a few Avensis's on here with a similar fault. I can't remember exactly what happens but I think the bearings start to break down/seize inside the starter. The bearing expands slightly due to the heat of the engine and make the fault worse when the car is hot.

When I spoke to a technician at Toyota he said the starter seems to be a weak point on the Avensis.

Obviously get it checked before buying a new one as they are fairly expensive. I'd look at warrantied reconditioned ones too or getting your one overhauled if cost is a factor rather than time.

Good luck and let us know how you get on

i have been experiencing the same problem with my previous car. the problem was as good el. contact lose on starter solenid feeding wire resulting the same problem with warm starting. Check all contacts -- i feel the small problem arises bige one.

If it starts up when cold then i don't think its the glow plugs. If their is a problem with the glow plugs normally the engine preheating light comes on or the EML light itself.

Hi

I have an 04 T2 4D4 and had the same problem. When it was cold it started first turn, when hot or warm would not start at all unless bump starting on a hill. Once started it ran well and there didn't feel as if there was anything wrong with fuel delivery or injectors. Took it to Toyota and it was the starter motor. Seems there's something in the starter that controls something else so even whilst the starter turns it just won't fire unless the engine is cold. Starter cost £330 plus VAT and an hours labour - ouch! If I knew it was that previously I could've sourced one elsewhere and fitted it myself.

Hope this helps.

hi

please clearly state the car status -- new or 2nd hand with milage.

in case of a new -- then it must be still under warranty; but in case of 2nd hand - you'd better check it in competentive garage.

the problem is that the car is not started and anyone can find a reason so easy/fastly. there were many issues with starting problems -- so read them thru an d may be you'll find those problems you suffer now. cheers/igor
