Rav4 No 5th Gear

My son spotted a '99 Rav4 on eBay but it keeps jumping out of 5th gear.

Could this be an easy fix and if not is it easy to pick up a second hand gearbox.

I'll try to put the link at the bottom. What would be the value of it with the problem it has?

Looks like a nice car!!!

The car uses the 3SFE engine which was around from 1994 to 2000. The gearbox is a pretty strong box, but I seem to remember seeing something about a jumping gear.

You shouldn't have any problem getting hold of a gearbox 2nd hand. Fitting? I think its maybe a 1 day job depending on how easily the bolts etc come apart.

The gearbox works with cables so whether they need adjusting....I'll have a think (whisky) and in the meantime another knowledgeable gent (ooops - or girl) will wander along.

You can fit a 5th gear and synchro in situ

Easy repair, about £140 for bits and 1.5hrs, I remeber one of my techs replacing one

They wear due to people sat with there hand on the gear leaver in 5th

No hesitation to buy

You should consider selling him your rather bland machine, and buy this RAV4 - it is obviously a snip! :)

I'll look at that. The good thing at the moment is my son is on a mechanics course at the local college and they are encouraged to bring there cars in for repairs.

I wonder if they would be interested in that job. It could be a first

Bothy..........Don't think they would have enough time on the course or the student attention to fix your lot....

Just wait a few more weeks and your be able to get spares and fixing advice with the weekly Indian Takeaway....for you Landy :lol: :lol:

And a few more days and it'll be the £1000 car - can't wait. For the depreciation some of the guys on here experience a year, I could buy 3 cars!! Anyway, Motherwell College do the same. I can spread my fleet around!
