Rev Control At Idle

Hi,

My old Celica (2001) used to idle at about 1,800 when the engine first started in the morning, then used to decrease when it was warm.

My new Celica (2003) seems to idle at about 1,900 as soon as you turn the key, then drop to normal limit straight after.

Do you think anything's wrong here?

Thanks.

Hi,

My "older" 93 one did 18~20,000 for a few mins on start up or longer when cold outside, and whined a bit untill it warmed up and dropped to under 1,000... it needed a fan belt, as the old rubber wouldnt grip as well when cold, perhaps your last celica had a similar problem, as now it idles high for about 10 to 20 seconds then drops to normal. But can someone with a GEN 7 confirm this is the norm?

Hi

I've got a Gen 7 T-Sport on an '03 plate. Mine drops from 1,800 on turning the key to around 1,000 within couple of seconds so I guess that's normal. When cold takes a second or two longer but it's always settled to 1,000 rpm within 5 seconds or so.

Mines idles at about 1600 at start up and depending on the outside temp, drops to about 900 after a couple of minutes. Now although the engines are made the same, they are all individuals in what they do and like. e.g. 2 exactly the same Celica gen 7's, both run on BP ultimate and then on V-power. I'd put money on it that they wouldn't choose the same fuels to run on at the end!

Anyway my point is that Iceland, it could be a number a things. It maybe your fan belt, which you'd get replaced in you 100k service when they do your timing chain. It could be your air flow sensor, oxygen sensor thing or lamda(spelling?) sensor going or dirty. Could be that when you service yours soon it acts more to how you'd expect.

If it's not causing any trouble at the moment, I'd just keep an eye on it. If the car is juddering, trying to cut out for no reason or lacking power then look more into it. Otherwise I'd wait til you've done your service and then see how she acts.
