Towing An Automatic Celica

Seems Unlikely

Hi folks, I've bought a celica auto for my girlfriend as a bit of a toy but need to get it home to service and MOT. I had arranged to borrow a trailer but i keep getting let down. I have a rigid towframe so could tow it home wheels down but am worried as it's an auto

Had considered Starting it up and running it on tickover to keep transmission cool whilst towing, will this work does anyone know? Or does anyone know what the handbook recommends as 'safe towing'? It's a 92 nonturbo if this helps. Handbook currently with car, 85 miles away...

If you put it on a A frame towbar it should be ok just leave it out of gear with the hand brake off matey

I'd be a bit wary about towing that far with the wheels down.

If I remember correctly Auto's can only really be safely towed at 30 mph ( low speeds really ) for a short time before the risk of damage occurs. It'd take 3 hours at that speed to get the car home - and that's far too long for a tow on an auto. If you're going wheels down then removing the driveshafts first is the recommended way to do it.

Someone feel free to correct me on this, but I'm pretty sure that I'm on the right lines with this

towing a car on all 4's down or even 2 wheels down for 85 miles miles is a bit of a risky treck, personaly i wouldn't try it and i've done some really stupid stunts.

if u know the car will walk through the mot then u might just be better of taking it to a local garage, get the mot, get some insurance and drive it home.

good luck mate

I have indeed done many foolhardy stunt myself ;) However i took the sensible option and hired a trailer, borrowed my mates van, lost his spare plate, went back to find it at the trailer hire place, had to buy a new one... Getting it home and assosiated costs were higher than the price of the car but enjoying going over it, so easy to work on!! Will be a little green at first but will get there i'm sure
