Radio Headunit Display (trip And Temperature Items)

Hi, I've just bought a Rav and am trying to make my mind up what to do about the radio. I still have the aftermarket unit from my last car, which has much better sound quality and also features DAB. I'm pretty much resigned to the fact that if I fit it I'll lose the use of the steering wheel controls for the stereo (unless anyone knows a way around this?) but I'd like to keep the additional information that the standard radio unit displays - I know from experience that seeing an mpg figure does effect the way I drive and, hence, my running costs. Does anyone know of any after-market devices or small digital screens which can show this information if I replace the radio?

Many thanks in anticipation of your help and advice.

Welcome to the club Lee. One of the audio experts will respond soon.

Its a matter of priority. If your priorities are such, then remove the steering wheel and keep both audio units....just get an extra paddle fitted to the handbrake lever to work each side of the rear brakes thus effectively steering the car?

(Elated cos wur rugby team cuffed the others and got a bonus point as weeel.)

Hi, Cornishlee

Just so you are in no doubt, I am NOT one of the audio experts that anchorman refered to, I just happened to look into this a little bit, so thought I would post my general findings

Your question has two parts:

1) Can you keep the extra info from the trip computer and the Temp?

Well, the temp is probably easy to replicate with a cheapo thermometer, with the probe stuck in the same place as the OEM one.

The trip computer is another matter and I would love to hear if it is possible (I doubt it personally and it is that that has stopped me swapping out the unit)

2) Will you lose the steering wheel controls?

Company called Connect2 claim that they can provide an adapter that will allow you to use steering wheel controls from ALL Toyotas with various manufactuers Head Units - makes like Sony, Alpine, JVC, etc. Have a google for Connect2 and see if your unit is compatible

3) Welcome to TOC

Looks an interesting bit of kit - found this alternate link for European (inc UK) supply

Does anyone know where the connector it plugs into is located on the RAV4?

This is the blurb from the website and an example pic ...

"How do I find the plug to connect the ScanGauge II?

The OBD2 connector is supposed to be located within 1 meter of the steering column. It is usually under the dash and just to the right or left of the steering column. Sometimes it will have a cover over its face. Other locations are under the dash on the passenger side under the dash, behind the ash tray and in a rare case, under the ash tray in the back seat armrest. The pictures below show the OBD2 plug in a typical location. "

Hoovie it's under the dash about 15 cm forward of the bonnet release on the driver's side of the footwell

Thanks, I had already looked at connects2.com, if that's the company you're referring to, and couldn't find anything for a Rav - I may of course have been looking in the wrong place; I found it quite a confusing site/

Thanks for that - it looks like a cheaper version of the Dash Hawk that I had been looking at and may be a way of spending yesterday's winnings.

It's available for less money in the UK here: http://www.ukobd.co.uk/gstore/store/g_view...sp?idProduct=90

I meant connects2 rather then connect2  - I think you sussed that already, but in case anyone else gets confused seeing some internet provider when they visit connect2.com looking for car stuff :D

I am sure I found a reference somewhere on a google to an adapter that works "with all Toyota vehicles" but cannot find it now :o - and the connects2 site does not mention Toyota for the CAN-BUS adapters, so I am confused now.

Finally - that scangauge IS still cheaper at my link :P £114.50 compared to your £116 ;)

Ah yes, Euros, not Sterling! I'm guessing it's still cheaper though, since my bank would charge me an exchange fee. Unless I'm getting confused by another website! (Parts sites always seem to be the worst, don't they?)

I've also just found a company which offers a kit including a fascia adaptor and leads for all functions including steering wheel controls, but am a bit dubious about the final claim as it appears to be a standard piece of text and not vehicle specific.

I've arranged a discount for one of these if I report my findings back to this board, but they're uncertain whether the 2003 diesel Rav-4 is OBD2 compliant. Does anyone on here know?

I believe they are...Pinkminki a user on here brought a OBD11 reader for her RAV and I'm 99.8% sure...but when Anchorman comes back from playing train driver, he will no doubt put your mind at rest....

Mind he was on the early train today, so should be back about 7pm following delays from snow on the embankment....

Mind you, nothing compared to British Airways and their ability to store thousands of suitcases - so much for the 'rule' that a suitcase must travel with the passenger owner.

Finished playing 1:1 scale trains!

Well according to the Toyota manual it is. This means facelifted 4.2s with the round spotlights.

If you want to be sure go to somebody with an OBD tester and just ask them to hook it up, if it shows communication you are set. I tried mine on wollastons which is a 2005 but the same model and it worked.

Hmm.. That seems to fit with what I'd been told, that it was very rare for any pre-2004 diesels in this country to have it. Might be worth a call to a Dealer.

......and if you buy direct from the good old U S of A at £90 ($169 inc shipping) http://www.scangauge.com/buy/index.shtml it is even cheaper than both your links :D :D :D I ordered mine last weekend when I saw this thread start - and DHL delivered it TODAY!! (would have been yesterday, but was out and had to wait an extra day). Now that's what I call a damn good service :D :D :D :D :D :D

Their US website states they will only ship to US

"We are currently shipping only to the United States, its possessions and Canada. We pay shipping."

Confused? I am.

Not wanting to be negative about this, Pips, BUT it is not that unlikely that the package from the US could get intercepted by customs, so then there is a 17.5% VAT charge on the £90 (£15.75) + a Post Office Handling charge (£5 or £10) and a 10% import duty charge (£9) - so that £90 bargain COULD - if one was unlucky - end up being more then buying from an EU seller.
