87 Gt 2.0 G4 Restoration....help!

Hello all,

Well yesterday Dylan ( 10 years old & spanner mad! ) and I rolled our sleeves up and started to give the old G4 convertible the once over.

She,s called Charlie Twice ( from Charlie Charlie - Dylans given her that name, Charlie - pheonetic for C C= Celica Convertible !! ) in good condition mechanically, just tatty n dull!

We are looking forward to dragging her into the millenium and while we do not intend to deviate from factory spec in the long term, we have decided to update the look of her, keeping all OEM parts for re-fitting later.

So here goes with the questions -

1 What other Celica seats will fit - Gen 5 for example, are they a straight forward swap? The now fitted grey cloth herringbone seats are ok except for the drivers which is quite poor & needs recovering. We are looking for a replacement - passenger side will do as we will strip & swap covers.

2 What size wheels/tyres can we update to? The current ones are 14 inch b ut we want to go to 16 maybe 17 inch - or is that going a hoop size or two too far?

3 Where oh where can we get a new PVC roof cover from??? Brand new / good second hand or a reputable UK company to make a new one from the old as pattern.

4 Finally we need two boot hydraulic stay/rams as the old uns are seized up....any one out there with some spare?

Any help & advice appriciated, mechanical, part source or location etc. Oh, and what are the Gen 4 known faults - if any ;)

REgards

I have one of these too and so proud to have found one!

I have found so far that just about everything on my 89 ST162 seems to fit it, apart from the back boot - havent checked the light clusters properly yet, imagine they are the same though.

I have put 17" Oz alloys onto it with low profile tyres. I went for larger ones on the back as recommended by my garage (it looks meaty and gives it a bit of a tilt) and one size lower on the front - thats different size tyres, not alloys.

Its got a huge exhaust and AVI injectors on it but I dont like them very much - I want a gentle twin cam purr - not a huge roar that just makes it sound and look chavved up.

Im pretty confident that apart from the hood and rear boot lid, ill be able to find all parts I need for it easily enough - my main task now is to restore it to how it was new, not chav it up in any way bar nice alloys and some ICE and give it the TLC it so much deserves.

Now I want to find how many of these are still in the UK - ive heard of one in devon, yours in wales and thats it for now!

Im stunned how much of a head turner it is - im shocked that the female of the species is so very fickle and easily swayed!

Now one,s car can wear the correct outfit for the occasion....

Whatever ones social calender the Celica Cabriolet will fit in with ones plans.

Unlike most other soft-tops, it has a hard centre panel which can be put on and taken off as quickly as the sun goes in and out.

When not fitted into the roof, the panel fits neatly into the boot.

But don,t just judge the Celica by its appearance. The car is as pleasing to the foot as it is to the eye.

For the 16 valve 2 litre fuel injected engine can accelerate from 0-60 in 8.5 seconds. And has a top speed of 131 mph.

Whilst the fully independant suspension along with power assisted rack and pinion steering, is more than a match for any hairpin bends that are likely to be encountered in Knightsbridge.

Or, indeed, on a rally course. Being bred from a distinguished line of winning cars has won the Celica a reputation for toughness.

On top of all this there,s every extra one could wish for.

Including of course, three roofs.
