Ride Comfort

Hi there

I have just purchased a T Spirit Auto saloon. Like others I am experiencing bad road noise (like a metalic roar) and frankly comfort wise it rides like a go-kart on some local roads. Current tyres are Goodyear Eagle NCT5's on 17" alloys.

Having looked at others comments on the forum, I just wondered if anyone has recently changed their tyres because of the same problem and what the outcome was. I am considering changing the 17" alloys for 16" and fitting Michelin Primacy HP tyres. Although I have just read on the forum that one bloke fitted Pirelli P7 205/55/16 which cured the noise, but he didn't mention comfort? I am at a loss to know what to do - £800 is a lot to spend.

Any comments or advice would be appreciated.

Also, anyone had problems with their boot catch? Mine would only shut if slammed. Dealer did a fix last week and appears to be much better now.

Weird. Mine has 17inch alloys with NCT5s and it's quiet and comfortable. How old is the car, i.e. is it pre or post the 2007 running changes? If you want to change the tyres then my advice is not to listen to people on here as we all have subjective opinions only (including me). Check out some scientific measurements of noise - either Auto Express or Which, where they've measured and compared the actual dbs. Otherwise it could be a very expensive mistake.

Tyre noise on mine hugely impoved by switching to Michelin Exalto from Dunlop SP 3000 - on 17" rims, ride is acceptable to me, slightly smoother on the Michelins.

Thanks for the reply. The more I read about tyres/noise etc the more confused I get !!

Apologies to the OP for an OT post, but do you have any details on the ‘2007 running changes’ (what was done, & when)?

TIA.

There's a thread here: http://toyotaownersclub.com/forums/index.p...running+changes

...but I don't think that it's the whole story. The road noise issue is a strange one. I have a post-2007 running changes Avensis and there is definitely no problem with road noise. There was an Auto-Express test of a post 2007 r.c Avensis and they always test db noise measurements of the car - the results were comparable to similar cars in the class. So I can only think they did a lot of work making the car quieter in these running changes.

Thanks for the link, Scoobs.

No technical changes mentioned, but perhaps they wouldn’t bother listing those, preferring to list 'bits of kit', instead?

FWIW, I seem to remember a ‘What Car’ review (last autumn?) that seemed to mention noticeable/too much road noise; presumably, they used an 'upgraded' model?
