No Drive To Any Wheels....

Not a happy chappie today!

Driving back from Glasgow, just off the Erskine Bridge and hears a small thud followed by no power to the wheels. Clutch is still operational and goes into gear OK but no power to the driving wheels. No warning or burning....nothing.

Calls the nice man at the AA who turns up inside 10 minutes and says it could be clutch, gearbox, drive shaft or prop?! He tows me home at 20 mph :( Not good for the street cred!

Car is outside the local garage waiting for the dude to turn up tomorrow to have a lookie...

Anyone any idea's? Could it be the Dual Mass Flywheel issue?

Vehicle is a 53 plate 2.0 ltr diesel Rav4 VX with 39,500 miles on the clock.

I fear I'll need to prize my wallet open for this one...

I hope it won't be long before I'm :driving: again.

Having just read through the flywheel stickie at the top I'm convinced it's the problem I have. A few vibrations and sometimes a bit difficult to engage 1st and reverse lately. Now to find out if I'll be covered under the five year extended warranty for this problem. I hope so....I don't fancy a bill for £2k.

wot a pain (other words get editted oot here).

hopefully if its the clutch, ye'll get the warranty jobbie.

If its not a warranty jobbie, look around for a non-dealer who is used to Jap cars and can help.

If you need to shift the car, I have a car transporter trailer and 3 cars that tow it so you can move it if need be - PM me if that would be a help and you can have free use of them.

Thanks for the very kind offer Bothy....most generous and just typical of us Scots! The Rav is outside a garage in Gartocharn but looks like it may be heading for Helensburgh Toyota depending on what the mechanic says. Towing shouldn't be a problem as I've got Landy and Disco owning mates. In fact I've been givin a loan of a Landrover County 12 seater safari thingy....my god they're drafty!!

Hopefully the DMF will be covered on the warranty. Its a pain but it is still a good motor - send my condolences to the owners of the LRs!

Welcome to club.

Bothy - what a fine gesture. You are a gentleman.

You'll be pleased to know I'm off to drive the first train - I will catch you later!

Think I am right in saying this, but you need to be careful towing 4WD cars?

I know when my Celica GT4 had to get towed to the dealer when the fan failed, becuase the front wheels were lifted off the ground, the rears had to be put on a dolly (not sure how aware these RAC/AA patrols are about this - I had to point it out to them).

The RAV4 may be in a similar situation?

Having had prior experience of the RAV breaking down twice :crybaby: :crybaby: and stranding me...The RAC call centre op said is it a 4x4 as they cant be towed due to full time four wheel drive...had to get a flat bed to take me back both times...You cant tow a RAV 4.2 as this will knacker the transmission...

SickRAV.jpg

Last time was for the DMF...I did not hear the clunk it supposedly made when the nut sheared of and put a hole in my DMF rendering it useless and drive as well...It would go in gear but forcefully but sounded like someone had chopped the exhaust off at the manifold....Once replaced DMF and Clutch it's like a new car..gear changes are so smooth and drive is effortless and refined....If yours falls within the 5 year 60k mile allowance...get it sorted....

If all four wheels of yours where on the ground when being towed you should be fine...if two where off ground I would check...I was told by the RAC guy thay cant tow 4x4 due to the weight ;)

Toyota recognised that certain models that have the DMF of a certain age had faulty clutch mechanism - there's a few posts on here if you search. Its made even easier if you go to the top and click on the RAV4 forum, and the DMF is a pinned item where you will get all the info.

Something about the bolts not being right. If the car is less than 5 years old & less than 60k miles they will replace it under warranty. Over that and its up to their discretion.

Towing my 3 door RAV with all 4 wheels on road was ok....altho we bent the bar to the towing vehicle!

Hi Lomond sorry to hear about your poorly Rav. dont know s*d all about mechanicals so can't help. but if your having your rav towed by a L.R. and i would strongly reccomend you not to, could you please cover it over or disguise it as the poor thing is going to be terribly embarrased and you may need a third vehicle i would suggest a landcruiser, to tow the L.R. thats towing the Rav, as the L.R. is bound to breakdown en route. :yahoo:

I wouldn't say my landrover is draughty - it is part of the air conditioning. The wipers are not very good at clearing the rain, but then they are fitted on the outside rather than the inside of the screen :lol2: :lol2: :lol2: :lol2: :lol2:

There's no rubber seals anywhere - doors/windows/windscreen/air intake so whatever water comes in gets back out easily.

Wollaston has got a moss garden in the runners for the sliding door windows. And you skin your knuckles when steering because the steering wheel is so big to help you wrestle the thing around curves (corners require shunts) so the gap between the wheel and the sharp bits on the door is tiny. Seems like the steering wheel was an afterthought.

Gosh - I thought the moss garden was an ecological brainwave! Mine has a sports (?) steering wheel which is smaller. Just needs biceps from Cyclops to turn. Thats why they are off road - saves turning corners - ye jist go straicht thru. The understeer is something that not even Lewis hamilton cuid master.

I found the easiest way to camouflage an army LR was to drive it into the nearest bush........JOB DONE....... :D :D :D just had too remember what bush you drove into when returning....

Loads of LR shaped holes in bushes on Salisbury plane and Brecon Beacons......

Just a quick update on my knackered Rav.

Local mechanic phoned up fairly local Toyota dealer who right away said its the DMF. Said he has two options a. they would send parts and local mechanic could fit and charge a fortune or b. Toyota dealer would pick up Rav and fix under warranty free of charge. I selected option b. :D

So as far as I'm aware Toyota are fixing under warranty although I've not spoken with them direct and the vehicle has been uplifted from the local garage. :yahoo:

Hope they don't take too long. My left leg muscle is bulging with this clutch and my knuckles are scraped by the side door of the Landy by turning the wheel. Don't even talk about wheel lock when turning! You need an Asda car park to turn the thing full lock in a circle...

You're doing well - I've never managed to get the LR to turn a circle.

Update on DMF issue...

Just had a call from Helensburgh Toyota this morning. Warranty claim has proceeded and Toyota are willing to pay for the parts only (Service Manager said £1500 worth) but are not willing to pay for the labour. This leaves me to pay £500 in labour charges :censor: . Not too downbeat about this but it could have been better/worse.

He said this is Toyota's new stance on the matter in the last few weeks. Because my car has the modification done (53 plate) including the ECU then they won't pay labour but if the vehicle hadn't had the mod done then Toyota would have carried out all work including labour free under warranty.

At least I'll be getting my Rav back tomorrow night and I can get rid of this Landrover! :driving:

Now totally confused - how can they pay one without the other? If its a warranty job then they must accept its a parts failure, and hence the relating costs to replace that part must be considered too.

As far as the £1500 worth is concerned - a clutch and flywheel cannae be that amount - thats entirely ridiculous. I thought the previous whole cost of replacement was £1500???

I'd try phoning/pm'ing Parts king to see what they would charge for the DMF failure thing; or search back on this forum.

Bomb the #$*&$%^*

Bothy....after driving a Landrover for two weeks he could have asked me for £5000 and a shot at the Mrs and I would have agreed!!

I just want my motor back again, and pronto!

I can almost feel it again - leather seats, heaters that work, CD multi play, all electric windows, remote locking, decent fuel consumption and able to turn a corner without taking three cuts at it!

Happy days..... B)
