Toyota Rav4 4-d4 Water Pump

Hi You out there,

I am new to the club and would appreciate advice on a little problem I have. The vehicle has been with me for just on 15 months but have been unable to determine the source of the moaning sound coming from the engine. I requested the Toyota garage to locate the problem but they were unable to come up with the answer and now, of course, :crybaby: the 12 month gurantee has expired !!

On checking out the various fluid levels this week end I had to top up the coolant reservoir with just over a litre of coolant !

Is it possible that the water pump is on its way out and if so where is it located on the engine ? Is there anywhere that I can obtain some information on this engine....Being a retired aircraft engineer I would normally carry out my own maintenance but a manual of sorts would be of great help....

A warm welcome to the forum!! I've a brother in law who works on aircraft - HE DOES HIS OWN MAINTENANCE TOO!

There are many with diesel RAVs on here.

You can download the manual for 4.2 models onwards - either do a search on this forum or someone will finish their dinner and tell you.....

Cannot believe that nobody else has dropped in to comment - from other comments, I think the water pump is a slight weakness. As for position of it, I am not sure on the later versions. certainly when the pump is on its way out, it provides you with a howling sound...and as far as I know there's a weep hole to allow water to escape if there is a failure in the pump seal.

On the pre 2000 engine, the water pump is driven by the timing belt. On 2001 and later models it's driven by a drive belt, but this is the petrol engine.

The replacement can be done in situ rather than hauling the engine out as some garages will have you believe - try PM ing Parts king for a water pump price and he'll probably tell you who to ask about the process...or is it in the pinned items??

Hi blade

The water pump is on the RH (LH viewed from under the bonnet). You need to get the covers off;

Frontcovers.jpg

Then get at the belt driven pump;

Waterpump.jpg

There is a bit of digging to do but the water pump and associated pulleys do get reported for all sorts of noises. It might be possible to run the engine with the covers off but be sure to temporarily replace the crank pulley or the belt and drive gear are free to work their way off.

Long day today and luckily when one engine failed on my train I could limp back with the other! It would be a good idea to have 2 engines on a LR!

Trying to see whether we can fit a 3SFE engine into the LR seeing as I have an extra one (engine) Could rig something up with pulleys and belts.

That'll cure the engine reliability - what about the rest of it?

My 2006 T180 also makes this strange humming noise, which after a day with Mr T finest mechanic was put down to the fuel filter which he was unable to fix and is presently in discussions with toyota technical to try and resolve the issue. I am a dervl mechanic to trade and find this explanation incredible.

Is this a common fault? I have a humming noise from my RAV, but its the electric water pump operating the charge intercooler, and once I've taken off, I can't hear it. :lol:

The Jaguar XJS has the same thing, but then it has an electric fuel pump too.

Thanks for info, I gave up on aircraft last year as I felt I had done enough working at Manston airport in a snow storm...anyway at the age of 71 one should be able to sit back and take time off...

How do I go about this download thing for the D-4D diesel...?

Many thanks for your help....I will study your diagams and sum up the courage to have a go...How many man hours would you allow for this job ?

Thanks for that , had a reply from Anchorman...very useful ...he shows the engine and pump location.

It looks like a bit of a job so I have asked for an idea on how long it would take to replace the pump....

Ther's quite a lot of digging (removing other bits and pieces) and its down the side of the engine so I would allow all day! If you do it on a Saturday and it runs into Sunday that might take some pressure off you. Probably the book time is about 3 or 4 hours but if you've never done one before!

Good luck mate.

No the strange "moaning" is definitely from the enging compartment....and the coolant level is dropping at a very slow rate but dropping hence my assumption that it was the water pump

I didn't know there was an electric pump...where is that located ? If I am quick enough and can open the bonnet before the noise stops it sounds like it is from the rear of the engine....CONFUSED !!..The blade

Don't worry blade there is no electric pump on a RAV. Bothy builds and owns all kinds of hybrid motors all in a quest to be the fastest man on earth. However, his efforts tend to be confounded by the Scottish police!!!
