Auris 2.0 D4d Tyre Wear

Hello - new member just joined and would welcome any help with the following problem.

New Auris 2.0 D4D TR bought in March 2007 and now has 13,000 mls on the clock.

After 9kmls noticed that both front tyres looked worn on both edges, so switched them to rears. At first 10kml service, tyre tread depths were 0mm on both edges. Therefore changed the factory fitted Yokohama tyres (tyre expert reckoned soft compound) for something a bit harder (Dunlop SP3000) and put back from rear to front wheels. Having now done 3k mls on new tyres, these are also showing same uneven edge wear. I have had steering geometry fully checked and all OK. Tyre pressures constantly checked for 35psi (under 99 mph).

Referred to my local dealer, who have now referred it to Toyota Technical who are still investigating. Customer Relations have already pointed out that tyre wear is not their responsibility, nor covered by the warranty.

I would accept this if I was a boy racer but I'm retired, and on my previous cars, Honda Civic (the previous model) - 26.5k mls on the first set, Honda Jazz (traded for the Auris) - 23k mls and still the first set.

Are diesels exceptionally wearing on tyres? This is my first experience of a diesel and don't know what to expect, but a new set of front tyres every 10k mls seems excessive.

The local dealer seems very helpful but has run out of ideas and of course this is the first time he has seen this problem.

Anybody else experiencing similar problems or anybody got any ideas what could be wrong?

I know it will not probably help you very much but on the old shape Avensis I was getting about 28,000 miles out of the front tyres !!! On the new shape Avensis I was getting about 12,000 miles out the front set of tyres !!!

My driving style had not changed !!! I really do believe it depends on how the suspension is set up and the type of compound they use for the tyres.

On the diesel Verso I achieved 20,000 miles out of the fronts and there was still a little wear left in them

I just dug my service report out from the 10k service.

F.O.S. 6 6 6 mm

F. N. S. 6 7 6 mm

Im still on the factory fitted Dunlop's

I would expect 20-25K from a set of tyres

Thanks for taking the effort to look up the old service history and what you are reporting is exactly what I would expect.

Unfortunately some of the other replies almost imply about 10k mls is about right.

I note your car was fitted with Dunlops whereas mine were factory fitted Yokohama.

I hope that may be the answer, otherwise I'm a bit stuck!

Once again many thanks

i have a 2ltr d-4d Tr and i had the same problem with tyre wear. The factory fitted Yokohamma's barely lasted 10k miles, as they were bald on the edges. I've not had the tracking checked as the wear was even on both sides of the tyre on both sides of the car and when driving on a straight road it doesn't pull to either the left or right and its the same when braking.

What i have done is increased the tyre pressure on the front to about 38-40 psi. So far the wear seems to be even but its hard to tell as the new tyres have only been on two months. Hope this is of help.

Yeah I certainly get it. When I get new tires I will increase the pressure to 38-40 psi.

Many thanks for that and I will definitely try the increased tyre pressure. Like you, my new tyres have only been on three months but I noticed the uneven wear after about 2k mls so in view of your experience, the tyre pressure seems to be a big help.

I also have yokohama tyres fitted to my TR 2.0 D-4D:- tread at 10,600 was front 3,3,3, rear 5,5,5 - I queried the "excessive wear " with the my local dealer in canterbury, but as usual got no helful response.

I have also have a friend with an MR2 whose yokohama tyres wore out in no time. About time toyota stopped fitting this make to UK cars perhaps?

Are there any tyres designed to be harder compound on the outside edges?

Could some one recommend one of these for me? TOYO - PROXES T1-R look decent and seem to have a thinker thread on the edges.

It has taken me quite a few months to research tyers so apologies for the late post. Both Yokoham and TOYO - PROXES are soft compound tire and will not last very long. Basically the better the tyer the less miles you will get out of them. So far the best all round tire seems to be the Falken FK452 and I will have them running with 39psi on the front.

Harder Compound Tyres:

What about Goodyear Eagle 205/55 R16 V (91) for £64.03 per corner including fitting cost

or for a little more go for the Michelin ENERGY E3A 205/55 R16 V @ £87.54 each inc fitting.

Order from Black Circles to be delivered to fitting centre:

To me there are 2 types of tyre...

1) Hard compound ones that seem to last 30k+ but have less grip and cost vary greatly for no reason than brand. So you may as well go for some cheaper brand. Edge wear is greatly reduced so you can have the air pressure at a more comfortable level. Fuel economy is better by about 3mpg over soft...

2) Second type is the more expensive soft compound that deliver much more grip in the dry and wet (including shorter breaking distance) but terrible on ice and the wear rate is 8-15k. Fuel economy is worse by about 3mpg, slightly harder ride especially as you increase air pressure to reduce edge wear. Requires more rotation but at the same time you don't really want less grip on the rear if you corner at speed.

Take your pick as there does not seem to be an in between?

In the end I opted for some soft Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 because it could save your life or save you rear ending some one in the wet. But it is upto you. Buy online to save costs. Goodyear Hydragrip seems like a good choice for a hard compound tyre for the wet UK roads but grip in the wet will not be up there with the softer compound tyre.

Hi! I do approx 30k per year in my 2000 Auris D4-D. I always run my tyres at max running pressures 40psi for economy and better handling reasons and have always had 20k+ out of front tyres.

Admitted it does slightly increase the harshness slightly over the bumps but not greatly.

Just had my 2 year old 2.0 DVD Tr serviced only done 12700 mls the back Continental tyres are down to 6mm and the front 3mm. I to am not a boy racer I never have had less than 25000 mls out any car or make of tyre. I can only assume the car is heavy on front tyres But will Toyota ever confirm this I dont think so

Did you consider it may not be the car but the tyres? If you search online for tyre reviews you will see that main problem with Conti PremiumContact is the wear. I had to replace tham at 13k too.

Are you under inflating the tyres? Check the stick on the chassis in the drivers door. Or are you cornering hard. These both cause excessive shoulder wear.

I posted to this thread in 2008, now i'm at nearly 30k miles in my t180 and still have the originals on the front! I did think about changing them but still enough tread. I know i'm suppose to change them at 25k or whatever, but i've checked them and they are in good condition with no dents, nicks, bulges or cracks.

Also, outer edge wear could indicate that your wheel's are pointing outwards and not balanced properly.

1.6 petrol, Continental summer tyres after 11k miles/18k km i have 5,5mm front and 6,5mm rear.

Diesel engine is much heavier, but 3mm on the front is really not much -_-
